Robert's Story

Life At the end of school I was looking at one of two choices. Working in the cotton mill or going into the military by draft or signing up. I joined the Navy with the idea of staying out of Viet Nam and getting into their electronics school. As Gomer Pile would say; Surprise! Surprise! They put me on a fifty foot gunboat patrolling in close to the beach and made a weapons expert out of me. After being shot at by everything from a .223 caliber up to eight-inch diameter shells for 366 days, wouldn’t you know it was a leap year. I went on to complete my naval career on the USS William R. Rush a Destroyer. I got to see the world, through a little round window. I don’t regret my navy years. Although I had to grow up a lot faster than I would have liked, The travel gave me an understanding of the world I would have not had otherwise. After the navy I move to Chicago and DeVry Insatiate of Technology to try the electronics thing again. While there I got it into my mind to try out for Roller Derby. This turned out to be a little more painful than I had anticipated. When you go flying over the rail up on one of the high banks it hurts when you hit the concrete, so I decide to stick with the electronics. I graduated fifth in my class so one of the job offers I had was from Link Simulation to go and work on the Apollo Fligh...Expand for more
t Simulator at the Johnson Space Center in Houston Texas. Being a science fiction nut I jumped at the offer. I worked there during the last SkyLab and the Souas missions. After that I moved to Binghamton New York for a computer school at the home plant. It was there that I was introduced to a young librarian named Elizabeth (Liz) Salls. For our first date we both made our first parachute jump. At this time they did not use the tandem equipment so you went out on a static line in an old military chute. I hit so hard that my knees went above my head and I put a hairline fracture in my left heel. Liz went over backwards and cracked her tailbone. So what do we do for our next date three days later? We go roller-skating. I figured I had found someone crazy enough to put up with me, so I marred her three months later. This August 17 it will have been thirty years. Liz and I have traveled the world together and lived in two foreign countries, Germany and Turkey. We currently live in Beaufort, South Carolina with our two dogs, Midnight a chow mix, and Lily a terrier mix. I still work on simulators for the military. The present one is for the F18 Hornet for the Marines. Yes I have been working for the same people for over thirty years, but where else can a grown man get paid for playing with a forty million dollar video game??
