Robert's Story

What a ride. I retired (finally) on January 1, 2020. I spent my whole life planning my retirement, so that I didn't make the mistakes of many of my friends and family who bounced around from job to job. Life has been interesting, and I found myself involved in adventures, and in some cases sadness which is a part of life.. I became a police officer at twenty-one in Los Angeles. I worked the gang detail in Los Angeles most of my career, and was a Watch Commander during the Rodney King riots. In 1984 as the result of the murder of Playmate of the Year, Dorothy Stratton I started doing bodyguard work on the side. I first started bodyguarding the movie producer-lover of Dorothy, and then I met others who asked for my assistance, or required peace of mind relating to their safety. Movie producers, actors, billionaire businessmen and musicians were my clients. I was able to travel over much of the world and see the lifestyle of the super wealthy and famous. In 1992 I broke my back and neck in an on-duty car accident. This changed my life, this changed my life and I had to retire from the police department in 1993. My active participation in sports took a big hit. In addition to injuries I suffered while on duty, and this major accident, I had to scale back my athletic activity. I had a long road to recovery, but I did for the most part continue to have an active life. I have been married 41 years, I have four children, and ten grandchildren. They bring me the most joy in my life, ...Expand for more
and provide an endless amount of laughter, and frequently concern. In 1999 my father-in-law who lived in Utah became sick with cancer. My wife and I moved there to help. I joined the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Department and worked there for 20 years. I spent five years on the Critical Incident Response Team (SWAT), and met more murderers, and saw the results of their viciousness than I care to remember. This made me appreciate even more the good things that had been bestowed upon me, and the desire to help the weak who are often victims of predators. I have continued to travel. Some places I admire for the beauty, and the friendliness of the local people. Other places remind me of how great we have it living in America with our freedoms, and the benefits we have. As I continue my journey I reflect a lot on my adventures to come, and how it will end. My father disdained education. It was part of his narrow minded demeanor, and some of his decisions I will never forgive him for. I put myself through school, getting an AA degree, Bachelors degree in Administration of Justice, and a Masters Degree in Management. My wife has two Masters Degrees, and our children all have higher education degrees with Bachelors and Master degrees. I have some regrets, but mostly I have had a very fulfilling life. I live on an island in Washington State, and I love to kayak, fish and golf. LIfe is Good! I hope it is for those friends I had in high school, and growing up with that I think of often.
