Robert's Story
May 2 2009 was the second annual Nazareth Adult Soapbox Derby. What started last year as a dozen cars evolved into almost 30 cars this year. The interesting thing about last year was that all the cars were designed and built from scratch. None of the builders knew what designs the other builders were working on till race day. Last year I used a steel frame plywood body and wheelchair wheels. The other fast car of the first year was plywood and small industrial wheels. What I expected this year is all the other builders would copy our designs many did.
For this year I wanted to push my fabrication skills and build something that more resembled a race car. I used fiberglass over a steel frame and more E-bay wheelchair wheels. A friend was interested in driving a car so I built her a car. Her car the X¿15 was Big, Black and Menacing but was purposely built slow and safe. All 3 cars performed flawlessly throughout the day. Unfortunately 2 of our cars the X15 and the 2.0 were paired up in the first round and the X-15 piloted by Peggy Prentis was eliminated in the second ...Expand for more
round. Next year Peggy wants the brakes removed and the tires upgraded. Last years car the U17 easily advanced to the finals along with my car. In the finals my more aerodynamic 2.0 beat Ron Bealer in the U17 but Sawfish Racing left with first and second place trophys.
The 2.0 was modeled after Mario Andretti's 1969 Indianapolis 500 winning car. The surprise of the day was when Mario Andretti came into our tent to view my re-creation of his car. His 1969 Indy car has a fascinating history. Mario filled me in with a little more history of the Brawner Hawk and he autographed the hood. Mario spent the whole day as the finish line flagman. It was nothing short of an interesting day. From what I heard back is that it was also a thrill for Mario Andretti
We called the Team Sawfish Racing and used a laughing sawfish that was a logo from a submarine movie. We had the logo embroidered on shirts and we were by far the best dressed team of the day.
