Robert's Story

I graduated from Hamlet High School in 1964. Served in the USAF until returning from Viet Nam via MedAvac to Charleston Naval Base hospital in February of 1969.I was an Airborne Radar and Avionics repairman in the service and traveled worldwide TDY spending my last year in Viet Nam in the 21TASS of the 14th Air Commando Wing home based in Nha Trang RVN. I spent most of my time up in the Central Highlands at Pleiku. We were forward air controllers and flew L-19 birddogs and O2A's and O2B's (Cessna 337's) and just as I was ending my tour we received the OV-10's twin turboprops. I worked for Ingersol Rand portable compressor divison from 1969 till 1972 as Supervisor of Electrical and Electronics maintenance. I relocated the machining department from Painted Post New York to Mocksville, N.C. for making all the components for the compressors that were already being assembled in Mocksville. While there I installed the first fully Automated Stacker Warehouse in the US. It was built by Conco Tellus and had Westinghouse controls with a wire guided cart transport system for foving materials from mthe warehouse to the machine shop and assembly building. I worked For Joseph Schlitz Brewing company In the engineering department in Winston Salem from 1972 until 1979. We had the largest producing brewery Schlitz owned and produced over 6,000,000 Barrels of beer a year. We could put 60 rail road boxcars in our shipping department and close the doors. We had 36 acres under roof and at times had as many as 60,000,000 cand in the basement for feeding to the can fillers on the production floor. This was a state of the art brewery with the latest technology available. I designed some fault monitoring equipment for use on our can and Bottle FilTec inspection equipment which Schlitz installed in all of our breweries nationwide. ia. We designed and built the M-113 line of Armored Personel carriers, The P-7 amphibious Assult Vehicles for the Marine Corp. and the Bradley Fighting Vehicle's for the Army and Marine Corp. We a 3,500,000 SF facility in San Jose with 7500 employees. We had 750 people in Machine and Plant Maintenance. While with FMC in California I assembled and put in operation the first 60KW CO2 Laser cutting machine in the country. We used it for cutting the armor plate usen on the Bradley Fighing Machine. I also was part of the team that installed the Largest 5 axis Profiller machining center Cincinnatti Milling Machine company had built along with two 30HC machining centers in a Flexabile manufacturing systen to machine the Boogie Wheel mounts and Turrent Ring and Engine and transmission mounts in the Welded up hull of the Bradley Fighting vehicle. I was transferred back to Aiken, S.C. in 1981 to build a machining facility and relocate equipment from San Jose as well as install new equipment in the first stages of relocating the manufacturing operations out of california. I was responsible for the plant maintenance operations while in Aiken. I transferred to our facility in Anniston Alabama in 1990 to run the plant maintenance, Environmental, Torsion Bar manufacturing operation. We made Suspension components for all of the Tracked Military Vehicles in Anniston. While there I designed and built the controls for two machines for presetting and fatigue testing of torsion bars for these vehicles. These machines had Two 1,000,000 inch pound rotary autuators. I left FMC after 15 years and went in business for myself doing industrial automation nationally and internationally doing work all over the US and Europe and Asia. I retired on 2006 at the age of 61 and spend my time traveling, flying my cessna 172, fishing, working in the yard and my shop, talking on my Ham Rig, and playing with my Grandchildren
