Robert's Story

After high school I had the opportunity to go to Alaska and work on the Trans Alaska Oil Pipeline on the North Slope. It was a strange and wonderful experience. In the summer there were 24 hours of daylight, constant temperatures of 60 degrees, and ravenous mosquito swarms that blocked the light from the sun. In the winter, the sun barely rose above the horizon to the south, the wind blew so hard it snowed sideways, and the mercury refused to come out of its bulb at 60 below zero. With the wind chill, it dropped to 90 degrees below. Teardrops would freeze to my eyelashes before they could even reach my cheeks. These were some of the extremes. The beauty and wonders of the rest of the state kept me here. There is fishing, hunting, and camping in areas of vast wilderness, some untouched by man. Yet there is also city life, no different from any urban area in America. I've been here ever since. an I, have said the same thing. I have no plans to ever leave the Greatland. When one lives in Alaska they say you are either born here or you are running from something. Our 3 marvelous children can claim that Alaskan birthright. On the other hand, for myself I have to wonder if I was running from that strange, fun, and frightful time that we all knew as high school. To borrow a quote, "It was the best of times; it was the worst of times." Every chance I get, I tell people about Alaska, and the lifestyles we live (which many outsiders find strange, though we Alaskans think of as commonplace). I relate the vast array of exciting experiences I've had, and I try to dispell the many myths they've heard. When I see that intense glimmer of interest in their eyes, it fills me with a sense of how my eyes must have appeared having experienced it first-hand. I came to Alaska to seek my fame and fortune. It's still a work in progress, but I like to believe life is a journey, rather than a destination.
