Robert's Story
Life
My daughter Althea is the center of my life followed closely by my work as a high school teacher in an alternative school for inner city drop outs. It took me two career shifts to finally end up a teacher. I started in retail management and found it unfulfilling. Then I did a lengthy stint in the advertising, which actually used the same skills I used as a teacher, but I didn't feel like I was making much of a difference in the world. I love Chicago and don't know of many places that would even tempt me as an alternative place to call home.
School
High school was a pretty hazy time for me. I know I was involved in lots of activities and a couple of sports and hung around with two completely separate groups of people, but the details are getting fuzzy over time. I have contact with virtually none of the people who were my best friends in school, which is a shame, but that is life. Shlobaum and Hardy were probably the most influential teachers for me from those days, and they are probably responsible for me being a teacher...Expand for more
today. (I'm not blaming them, although my students might from time to time.)
College
College was in fits and starts for me. My freshman year at the University of Nebraska right out of high school was more a period of excess than an educational experience. I left school after the frst year and went to work for six years in retail management. When I hit the ceiling because of my lack of a degree, I returned to school and finished my English degree. Then I went to work in advertising for several years. After my divorce, I decided I had an opportunity to change careers, so I took a solid year off and finished a second degree in secondary education at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville.
Workplace
I work as an English teacher at an alternative high school for urban former drop outs in Chicago. I love it. I feel like the kids appreciate what I do and that I'm doing something worthwhile. It's definitely not as lucrative as my earlier career in advertising, but I sleep well at night and feel pretty good about where I am.
