Robert's Story
I'm retired now, and it's the best 'job' I've ever had! I was Chief Reliability Engineer at an aerospace company in my first career, and a pastry chef in my second. That was quite a change--going from building high-tech guidance systems for NASA spacecraft and teaching young engineers to baking croissants and teaching culinary students!
I've won several culinary awards since becoming a chef, but one of the most rewarding things about this profession, other than teaching young, aspiring chefs-in-training, is being my wife's private Personal Chef. She hasn't cooked a meal in over sixteen years, and she LOVES it! (Mostly, however, I think she enjoys bragging about me to her friends).
Currently, I spend much of my spare time as a guest chef-instructor at local culinary schools and cooking and/or doing cooking demonstrations at charity events. I'm also very active in the local chapter of the American Culinary Federation (ACF). Lately I've done a lot of travelling to five-star resorts in the Caribbean to train and evaluate resort chefs for ACF certifications.
For the past two years I was invited (and accepted the invitation) to help prepare banquets for the US Navy to celebrate them celebrate the Navy's birthday at their submarine base on Andros Island in the Bahamas (Google AUTEC to see the base). I'll be do...Expand for more
ing that again this year (2009), in October. If you'd care to see photos of me 'in action' go to the "Gulf To Lakes Chefs and Cooks Association website. (You'll have to do a Google search to find it 'cause Classmates won't let me put a link here).
For fun (as if what I do isn't fun enough), I enjoy going on cruises with my wife, Helena. We try to go on two cruises a year (one year we did three), but since there's a limit to our finances, some years we only cruise once.
The only down-side in my life has been health issues. I'm a seven-time cancer survivor. I've had two heart attacks, followed by open-heart surgery both times. I had three strokes that, luckily, affected only my vision ('they' won't let me drive anymore). I'm diabetic, have high blood pressure, heart disease and advanced arthritis.
Sounds like I'm in pretty bad shape, doesn't it? Even so, most people say I look good for my age. They don't realize I'm a 'train wreck' on the inside! I try not to dwell too much on medical challenges though. I's way more important to live life to the fullest extent possible rather than complain about the things I cannot or should not do anymore.
BTW... I also maintain a Facebook page. Classmates won't let me insert a link, but if you want to check it out, just do a 'people' search for Robert Ponsi on Facebook.
