Robert's Story
I moved to Memphis in the fall of 1965 and entered Trezevant as a senior that same year. I had never been in one place long enough to develop any lasting impressions, nor had I lived in a city the size of Memphis, where my anonymity could be readily assured. In fact, had it not been for my charming and sociable younger sister, I would have never become involved in any social activities. I did, however, enjoy school and I received a great deal of encouragement from my teachers, enough so, that I enrolled at Memphis State immediately after graduation from Trezevant to begin a long and successful academic career. ork on my doctorate in the fall of 1980.
Currently, I am a professor of sociology and the associate director of the Sequoyah National Research Center at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, where I have lived since 1988. I'm married to the former Miss Sonja McGough of Jonesboro, Arkansas, and we have one son, Ian, who also lives in Little Rock. I have lived in the South all of my adult life, but curiously, I still consider myself as being from New England. My beloved sister Dee, however, has made the complete transition and is a smart and well-liked southern woman. She has been instrumental in my tutelage on how to "be Southern," however, it is one the few courses at which I fail miserably.
