Robert Stambaugh:

CLASS OF 1974
Lakewood, CO

Robert's Story

Life I have been real reluctant to do this,(that is signing up for this classmates) but, here it goes. I did not attend any colleges, or join the military I joined the work force the day after I graduated, hiring on with Jefferson County Road and Bridge department as a truck driver/laboror. After about a year and a half I got a promotion to equipment operator. I operated a road grader for 2 years. I worked out of a shop real close to my parents house in Deer Creek Canyon called Critchell shop. Three years into this I bought a house down off Sheridan Blvd and Morrison Road at 20 years old. It was tough at that time financially so I took on a second job at Seven Eleven working at Zuni St. and Evans as good friend a fellow classmate Tom Haye as my manager. I did that for appoximately a year then quit. Three years into my job at Jefferson County I applied for a job as a trainman for the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad. In 1978 on July 1 I married a girl to whom I had dated for almost 4 years and her name was Christina A. Hudson, and I might add we are still married. In August of that same year and two years after my application the railroad called me, I interviewed and got the job. I have been there ever since in a matter of speaking but even though I never left the property I have worked for the Southern Pacific and now for the Union Pacific railroads. Mostly the same position which encompasses several crafts to which most people have little understanding as to what it is I do. It pays fairly well for a person with no college degree and I attribute that to the fact that it is union, and I am dedicated to the union cause. I was elected for two terms as the Local Chairman representing the Yard employees. A year into my second term I resigned, it is very demanding on your time and your home life. One of the big things was the railroad has been doing a lot of hiring in the last 8 years or so and understanding our agreements and work structure is dif...Expand for more
ficult, along with the fact that the railroad heeps up a lot of responsiblity onto a new employee in a short amount of time, and a lot mistakes are made, all through this a Local Chairman is involved, I had had enough. Enough about my job it would take a book to explain it all. In 1978 I actually got married twice once to the railroad and then to my wife. She deserves a medal for putting up with me. But all in all we have had our ups and downs, I hate to go back to my job but working for the railroad was not steady employment for the first 10 years. We have made it together I think I have finally got leg up on the fincial part of my life, but, I say that with reservation because of what I see in politics. It was a joint effort and we have two boys to which I love very dearly but I am not sure even though they are 23 and 19 years old, what there futures are going to be like. That is my job as parent? To prepare your offspring for survival, isn't it? They are for the most part good kids. My oldest son works at Comcast and my youngest is attending school at Arapahoe Community College as a freshmen. They are both still living at home. My wife, she is also in a union job, working in various positions at King Soopers, she was also a union stewart for about 10 years. She graduated from Heritage High School in 1978. She attempted to go to college at A.C.C. and with having a job, kids, etc. in proved to be to much. We are I guess what is called dinosaurs, we have been in our jobs for 28 and 27 years respectively. I cannot say enough about how lucky I am in the choice I made for a wife. When I was younger I was not so sure, but, now I am! Hope to all those I knew in high school that you can say the same and that your lives have been gratifying for you. I think as a person grows older, things that were important when you were young are not now, but, I want everyone to know, no matter what you may have thought of me, that hope you are all happy now.
