Robert's Story

Hello Everybody. In preparation for our 50th class reunion, I'm helping track down contact information for all members of the class of 1974, whether someone graduated early, late, or left Nottingham for another school. Right now we have about 350 people on our list but contact info for only about 100 of you. If you are in touch with anyone from the class of 1974, please let me know their contact info. (To respect everyone's privacy, emails will be sent out as bcc'd.) Thank you. As for me, after Nottingham I went to college and later grad school at so-called "elite" institutions. In neither place did I ever have a teacher who approached Kay Kasberger in professionalism, enthusiasm, work effort, and concern for her students. She was terrific. She taught me how to write, which is how I made my living for many years, and left teaching and life way too young. My career path was not as straight as the path I took from 2654 East Genesee Street, where I lived while growing up, to Nottingham. In college I studied Russian and economics, which were of zero use to me when I signed up for the Peace Corps and was assigned to a remote, rural health clinic near the border of Liberia and the Ivory Coast in West Africa where I spent two and a half years. After that I got an MBA that was also of very little use as I spent about half of my career as a writer and the...Expand for more
other half as a self-employed, general management consultant for public and private organizations in many countries. In that role, I found that very little of what was taught in grad school had any practical application in the real world. In 2002, I returned to Peace Corps as the country director for the program in Cameroon. When that five-year gig was up, my family and I resettled in Madagascar where we spent five years while I worked mainly in the mining industry. Then, in 2012, we moved to Barcelona, Spain where we live today. Somewhere along the way, I guess I retired because I stopped looking for work and nobody was clamoring to hire me. Along the way, Nina, whom I met in the early 90s while living in San Francisco, and we had a daughter who is now in the second half of her 20s and who grew up with us in francophone Africa. Nina and I will mark 30 years of marriage in May 2024. Life since Nottingham has followed an often curvy path with many ups and lots of professional and personal downs, disappointments, and struggles with depression. But, in the end, it has all turned out okay, which is how I hope it has worked out for you, too. See you in CNY in September 2024.
