Robert's Story
I graduated from the University of Florida in the spring of 1981. I married and returned to Lake City for about a year. During that time I worked for 84 Lumber and my oldest daughter was born at Alachua General. I did a short stint (very short...don't ask) at WGRO-AM.
I moved to Washington, North Carolina and worked at WITN-TV. It was a small station in a really small town, but the place had a interesting history as one of Blackbeard's chosen spots. That got me started on a pirate history kick in recent years (also credit the internet with making it easy to research such things). My son was born during my years in NC. I managed to end up in video engineering during my stay at WITN-TV.
I eventually ended up in my current location, near Richmond, Virginia. I worked for WRIC-TV as a Master Control Operator, but eventually left television for the computer industry (yes folks, I became a proud computer geek). I worked for an army contractor in automated logistics and wore a variety of hats for 13 years. The contract eventually ran out and the company folded up. I worked as a temp for a few months and landed a job as a mainframe operator at Virginia Commonwealth University,...Expand for more
where I have spent the last sixteen years. They retired the mainframe and we are now a network operations center. My youngest daughter was born in Virginia.
My first wife and I parted ways. The girls went to Florida with her and currently reside in Lake City. My oldest daughter is a graduate of CHS and the University of Central Florida. My youngest got her GED and is currently attending LCCC. My son ended up with me. He got his GED and completed coursework for welding at John Tyler Community College. I remarried almost 20 years ago (anniversary in August) and we're a happy active couple. We regularly attend Scottish Festivals, The Virginia Maple Festival, and The Virginia and Maryland Renaissance Faires. We make a couple of trips a year to Gettysburg, PA, as well as the Smithsonian in Washington DC and hiking trips to the mountains.
I'm sure some of you have heard that I had a heart attack about 11 years ago. Obviously I'm still around, unless this is the undead typing to you. According to the cardiologist, I have recovered quite well. Well enough to even be back on the hiking trails. I hope all is well with everyone and I hope to hear from you in the near future.
