Robert's Story
Looking back, my time at Lincoln and the following two years at Delta can best be described as unfocused, without a clear direction or goal. That all changed in the summer of 1966, when I enlisted in the Navy. Four years and three trips to Viet Nam later, I began again. Returning to Delta with a focus, a goal and an all consuming intensity to catch up with you, my classmates. You see, in my mind, I was 6 years behind the rest of you in establishing my life and career, and I needed to work doubly hard to catch up. I transferred to San Jose State, and graduated in 1976.
It had always been my plan to establish a business in Stockton, but those plans were set aside when I realized that Silicon Valley was the new gold rush, the place where a young man could stake his claim, and I didnt look back.
I was fortunate to land a job with one of the areas best commercial photographers. I learned more from him than I ever learned in school. In 1984 I opened Weaver Photography, and like Apple, HP, and others, it began in my garage. I have served as both a board member and president of my local and regional professional photography associations. My photography has won honors at the local, state and national levels.
At a dance in the fall of 1977, across a crowded room, I first saw my future wife, Paula. She was a beautiful dancer, very popular and not surprisingly, her dance card was quite full. Now, being patient does not come easily for me, but she needed to kiss a few frogs. Our first date was in June 1978, and we have been together ever since. We purchased our home in Mountain View in 1980, and were married in April 1982. We have no children.
As time went on, I became involved in the community. Our neighborhoods issues and concerns were not being addressed by the city, so Paula and I started a neighborhood association. I was appointed to the Planning Commission where I served for 6 years, and in 2002 I served as chair of Mountain Views Centennial Celebration Committee. In 1988 I attended meetings of the California Vietnam Veterans Memorial Commission. I noticed that there were no references to the Navys involvement in Vietnam on the Place Names Map in the proposed memorial (most committee members were infantry). When I brought this to the commissions attention,Tonkin Gulf, Yankee Station and Dixie Station were added; the resulting memorial is stunning. When the Navy decommissioned Moffett Field, I sat on the Joint Cities Community Advisory Committee which proposed options for its civilian reuse. Also, I am a founding member of the Moffett Field Historical Association and past pre...Expand for more
sident of the Mountain View Historical Association. There have been some civic disappointments as well. I didnt get elected to the City Council, which in hindsight was a blessing. I also spent six years in a group effort trying unsuccessfully to establish a History Museum in Mountain View. Often I have felt that my Patron Saint is the one for lost causes.
The downside of all of the above has been a damper on serious traveling for us. We are now both retired and looking forward to visiting long deferred destinations.
None of this would have been possible without Paulas love and support, and I consider our 44 years together as a team my greatest asset and accomplishment.
As classmates, we are all diaspora from a time long past, and I am looking forward to reuniting with you at our 50 year event.
August 2015
It was exciting to see so many classmates at the reunion last year, and I regret that I didn't have time to visit with more of you. Since the reunion, Paula and I have been preparing our home for sale, packing up 35 years of memories and a lot of stuff we couldn't live without (but now we are) and putting it all into storage while we look for our next home. Downsizing and simplification of our lives is the goal, but it is easier said than done.
December 2015
Paula & I have settled in Gilroy, CA. where we can be near to family members. We are planning our Great American Road Trip for this fall along Route 66 visiting friends and family along the way.
October 2019
Another Great American Road Trip, pretty much duplicating the one from 3 years ago, but this time we saw new places we missed on our previous trip, and stayed longer at places we enjoy.
March 2023
Paula has been diagnosed with Parkinson's and we have adjusted our lives accordingly. We are no longer taking long trips, but we are having a great time visiting places closer to home. This whole process has brought us closer and made us focused on our time together. This April, we will be celebrating our 41st anniversary. I still need to get out of the house, and have become involved in Gilroy politics, though not even close to the extent I was in Mountain View. I have accepted the fact that I'm not 20 anymore, as my body often reminds me. We are still trying to pack up our life and downsize. We are now finding it easier to let go of things as we value the empty space over the clutter. We moved to Gilroy to be near to my sister Marlys ( LHS '69 ). and last year she moved to the Nashville area. Paula and I have always relied on each other, and that is a strong component to a long and happy relationship.
