Robert West:

CLASS OF 1973
Opa locka, FL

Robert's Story

After leaving school, I joined the Navy. I was attached to a fighter squadron at NAS Miramar, San Diego. There I worked on the F-4 Phantom and deployed on the USS Kittyhawk. Since I enjoyed flying, I decided to return to school so I could apply for a commission, then to flight school. It was very difficult, working all day, then attending night classes both San Diego State and UCSD. I was also able to take classes while deployed overseas. In my second year of college, I discovered that since my uncle had been the Chancellor of USC, I was automatically accepted and could go there for free. Guess where I went... Upon completing college and getting a degree in aviation, I applied for a commission and flight school. On August 2, 1976, I got my commission and off to Pensacola, Florida for flight School. After flight school, I returned to NAS Miramar, attached to Fighter Squadron 21 flying the F-4 Phantom, then the F-14 Tomcat. My next duty assignment took me to NAS Moffett Field, Mountain View, California, where I flew the P-3 Orion submarine hunter. I stayed here until 1980, and was transferred to NWC China Lake, Ridgecrest, California. Here I worked on and tested the modifications made on several different weapons systems. I also flew the chase missions that were conducted on NASA's space shuttle. In fact, I was flying the chase plane on the very first detachment of the shuttle form the 747 that was carrying it. My next assignment took me back to San Diego for seven months, then I was transferred to run the Reserve Center, Coconut Grove. That was a great assignment, being back home, but it only lasted 18 months. Next was ships company on the USS Forrestal, Jacksonville. I was assigned as the weapons officer, G-3...Expand for more
division. The ship was deployed, so after getting my family settled, I had to fly to Naples, Italy to catch the ship. This assignment only lasted 6 months as the ship was going to dry dock to be refurbished. So off to Norfolk, Va, and assigned to the USS Independence. Again, I was assigned to G-3 as the weapons officer. Knowing that I would only be here 10 months, I left my family back in Jacksonville. I returned back to Jacksonville, where I was assigned to NAS Cecil Field, Flying A-7 aircraft, then the F-18. I stayed here until November, 1986, Then was assigned to NAS Key West as the weapons officer. Best duty assignment I ever had!!! I stayed here until I retired from the Navy on August 31, 1992 with the rank of Commander (O5). After retiring, we moved to Port Charlotte, Florida. Here I became a deputy with the Charlotte County Sheriff's Department. I worked at the department going from road patrol to detective investigating major crimes. Figuring out that I put a lot of long hours in preparing a case, only to have the State Attorney reduce the charges to a lesser charge making it easier for them to get a conviction, I left the department after 7 years. I then went to work for Publix for ten years, retiring as a store manager in January 2012. I now live in North Port, Florida, and enjoying my retired life. I have a wonderful wife Jill, 4 children, James, Jennifer, Jacqueline, And Jonathan. I also have 15 grandchildren that keep me busy. I do a lot of fishing, camping, and after purchasing my new toy, an airplane, I do a lot of flying. Currently, I am teaching 2 of my grandsons how to fly, which has kept me busy. Life has been wonderful!! If I had a chance to do it all over, I wouldn't change a thing!!
