Robert's Story

Military The predemoninance of the time I spent on active duty in the Navy as a Hospital Corpsman. I spent most of that time stationed at Camp Pendleton in California a major Marine Corps base. and I wouldn't change a thing. The Marines were the best thing that happened to me while I was on active duty. I had a great time while I was stationed with them. I did more with the Marines in three years than most people do in thier whole lives. I climbed mountains freehand in the middle of the night with a full pack. Well, let me put that in better light. I climbed A cliff freehand a two a.m. with a full pack with a platoon of Marines. Did mountain warfair training, dessert training, and even jungle warfain training. I did training of almost every type with the Marines and discharged most every handheld weapon the Marine arsenal had at the time. 45 pistol, 9mm pistol, m16A1 and A2 Rifle, M60 Machine Rifle, M60 gernade launcher, L.A.W. and DRAGON, which are shoulder launched and in one case wire- guided missle. I have been all over this country and I have been to Okinawa, Japan, and all over South Korea. To Say that I know South Korea by foot is not too untrue. Marines are a marching bunch. Trucks just seem to slow things down a bit, hehe. I have never walked farther or for as far as that goes, while I was with the Marines I have never run further. The longest run I was on was 22 miles as the crow flies and that was along the ridge line, Marines like to run along mountains, and it was fun. Unfortunately I cou...Expand for more
ldn't get anyone to finish the run. We had already run 22 miles and I was raring to go the last 4 plus miles to say that I had run the distance of a marathon. But, alas no one would do it with me and the Colonel ordered me to shower up and get ready for chow. I was bummed, it would only have taken a half hour at a good pace and I was ready to take it at a good pace to finish it... The Marines treated me quite well and I treated them just as well. I took the time to educate myself better so that I was treating them to the best of my abilitites. I ask my Batallion Surgeon for more and better training so that I could do just that. He and I went to school for A.C.L.S. and B.T.L.S. Advanced Course, which are Advance Cardiac Life Saving and Basic Trauma Life Saving Advanced Course and then we took the Teachers courses so we could train others to do the same on Camp Pendleton... I had to open my mouth, hehe... Not only did my Batallion get better treatment but all Marines on Camp Pendleton got better treatment until I was trensferred overseas...Then I started training Medical personnel overseas on Okinawa, Japan to do the same. Before I went overseas though I was transferred to another batallion and I found out that my new batallion was already ready for me... My new Batallion Surgeon was already trained in A.C.L.S. and B.T.L.S. Training Courses to teach like I was so I was not alone.. They had had this all planned to steal me from my old batallion all along and my old batallion was bent...But that is old news...
