Robert's Story
Life
I graduated from John
Tyler in May of 1967 and was in Vietnam in December of that year. I served two tours with a Marine Force Recon: Company.
After the service I attempted to go back to school, but did not fit in with the college scene at that time. I traveled for the next seven years plyaing music for a living. Several of the bands did pretty well, but I had the most sucess in Canada with a group called "Scrubaloe Cane".
I turned to full time law enforcement in 1978 with the Nueces County Sheriff's Dept. in Corpus Christi. I continued to play music part-time while advancing up the ranks in law enforcement. I have worked as an undercover narcotics investigator, SWAT, K-9, and served as a Chief of Police for two Texas cities.
I left full time law enforcement in 1996 and took over the criminal justice department at Brazosport College. I have completed a B.S. in Criminal Justice; an M.S. in Human Servies/Criminal Justice; and am working on my PhD in Humman Services/Criminal Justice.
I became interested in the field of mental health, so I left the college an took a positon with the local MHMR provider for the Texas Gulf Coast. I enjoy the job, although it does not pay well. Texas is 49th out of 50 states in it's support of menatl health agencies. Not very good, huh?
I don't know what I will try next. I want to complete my internship in Behavioral Medicine and work with verterans suffering from PTSD as I am. We will see what happens.
School
I enjoyed my school years i...Expand for more
n Tyler. Ramey, Boulter, and John Tyler were all close to my home. Most of all I remember the people. There were several people that I went all the way through school with. This will always be a time that are flooded with memories. Good and not so good.
College
College is sort of a blur since I attended school as an adult. When you are told to go on to college directly from High School they know what they are talking about. It is much more difficult when you are older and have to relearn to study, take tests, etc. But I am prould of what I ahave accomplished academically. I promised my parents if they would sign for me to enlist in the Marine Corp, I would get my degree after the service. Both my parents are deceased; but I am glad I have been able to keep that promise.
Workplace
At the present time I am working as a service coordinator for the local MHMR. My case load consists of 25 clients that all have diagnosis of a severe mental illneses. They are all on probation or parole also. It makes for a very intense situation mort times than not. We try to keep them out of jail and functioning, but it is difficult sometimes. After completing my PhD I hope to work as a psychologist and staff the veterans that we serve.
Military
Enlisted in the Marine Corps in August of 1967. Spent two tours in Vietnam with a Marine Force Recon: unit, and then spent another two years on the island of Okinawa studying Okinawan martial arts. Came back to the U. S. in 1971 and was honorably discharged.
