Robert's Story

I was in Lansing until May of 1963. Our family moved from Lansing to Daytona Beach, Florida. I graduated from school there in 1967. The annual spring breaks were fun and brought famous bands to the area. The surfing in the area was great, 1964 to 1970 was an active hurricane period. I took that up and enjoyed the sport so much that I missed a lot of school. I started at the local junior college in 1967. I, immediately, started with the passion that I had in high school - surfing! This proved to have a negative effect on my grades. After maturing, somewhat, I graduated. I started at the University of Central Florida. I was hired by the Holly Hill Police Department in 1974. During the early days there I finished college. I was regularly promoted until I was the Assistant Chief of Police (lieutenant). Seeing no future there for at least 15 years, I was hired by the Daytona Beach Police Department. It was tougher to make rank there. I became a detective, bicycle officer, and eventually became a sergeant. I was an "acting lieutenant" for three years, a detective sergeant, and later I returned to being a patrol sergeant. That job was very exciting and I loved it. Holly Hill and Daytona are right next to each other. Holly Hill had some strange crime but Daytona's was even better! The wo...Expand for more
rk was exciting and sometimes dangerous. In 2007 I received the Medal of Valor for my involvement in the apprehension of a man who I shot it out with right after he murdered his ex-girlfriend. He was going to murder their son but my intervention caused him to run. He was captured and is spending life, without parole in prison. In 2007 I retired and continued working part time until July of 2015. I realized that I loved the adventure. Since then, I've camped across country, camped in the Everglades (this was in a remote area that I reached by traveling 20 miles toward East Cape Sable by canoe - my girlfriend didn't enjoy that trip). I have scuba dived, fish off shore, and have traveled in Europe, Mexico, and all over the US. The last trip was with my sister, my girlfriend, my cousins John Howell and Marcia Weaver (from Lansing) the length of the Grand Canyon on a pontoon boat. I am trying, hard, to come up with some other type of trip but it will be hard to top that one. I am divorced and I have one daughter. I retired with honors from the Daytona Beach Polce Department after 23 years and work part time there just to stay in the "know." I visit Lansing frequently and got to attend Lansings class of 1967's 40th reunion in 2007. I still live in the Daytona Beach area, and enjoy it.

The ride is average. I did find the fabled Jeep Beach groups. North of Silver Beach, there are small groups that are scattered until you get to the Broadway (ISB) approach. No jeeps until you get to the Hard Rock. Later, th
Recovering from my latest knee injury. Great weekend so far: first day of the year surfing (took me 45 minutes to get back), great pizza with very special friends, as I got on my bicycle for this ride I said “Hi” to a burge
Good morning from Holly Hill Florida
These are interesting times for me. Returning to surfing, blood pressure down, and returning to riding the Loop. Strange days. I’m loving it!

Today’s ride. I was wearing my winter bicycle cloths.
This is about a quarter of a mile north of Granada. It’s the future of East Volusia Beaches. I’ll bet the county will fill in the sand to replace the sand that a storm will take out. There is another no trespassing, roped o
