Bob's Story

While attending Sweetwater High School my passion and energy was specifically devoted to developing a proficiency in the Music Department as well as the Varsity Golf Team. I played the Trumpet in the Marching Band and the French Horn in the Orchestra. To this day I still miss the strength and power of the sounds that surround you while contributing in the reproduction of a music composer's work of art. As a member of the Advanced Band; Stage Band; Orchestra and Pep Band, I was also privileged and honored to hold leadership positions of Band President; Orchestra Vice-President as well as Pep Band Leader in my Senior year. As far as the Sweetwater Golf Team goes I earned the opportunity to play in one of the top six competitive positions all three years. In 1968 our Team win / loss record was the best ever at SUHI to date. I would like to also mention that Bill Rufing was our number 1 golf team member all three years and was a fierce competitor as well as a premier talent in the golfing community. Regrettably Bill passed away much too early in his life and will be forever remembered by our SUHI 67-69 golf team, as well as many in the game! Rest in peace Bill! After the glory days at Sweetwater High, I took a try at continuing my education at Southwestern College while working a night job. I wasn't quite focused or dedicated to that process yet, so the formal education option was out the window for a while. In 1972 I met a living angel and her name was Jacki. That sounds like the beginning to some nice lyrics to a song doesn't it? I'm sorry I digress... anyway to continue; we kissed for the first time on Valentine's Day, and so went my heart. She is everything a man would ever want and incredibly I began thoughts of living with her the rest of my life. This was truly a magical moment in my life. I had never felt like this before. Well maybe I should write a song! Anyway in 1973 (on my birhday) we were married in a community church down the street from where she lived in Paradise Hills, San Diego. Jacki attended Morse High School while we dated, but was out with her diploma by the time we tied the knot. Okay stop what you are thinking! We didn't celebrate the birth of our first kid for another 5 years. Following the completion of a Cable TV trade school "certificate program" for "Cable Lineman/Technician" in 1974 I discovered an employment opportunity of a life time by landing a job with Southwestern Cable TV. The San Diego Company today is known ...Expand for more
as Time Warner. As far as the Cable Television career goes, I have changed company locations twice here in San Diego, if you don't count the ownership and name changes. I have been with Cox Communications for the past 21 years. So if you add it all up I have 36 years involved with Cable Telecommunications Industry and will celebrate 37 years of marriage to Jacki in August 2010. I did eventually go back to school late in 1974 (in the evening of course) and the time finally was right for invaluable learning that made all the sense in the world now. I discovered knowledge was power and this led to promotions and money too! Sure wish I took advantage of that realization back in the high school day! I even earn academic excellence recognition by placement on the College Dean's list. So by 1979 I received my Associate of Arts Degree in Electronics Communications from San Diego Evening College (which is a coalition of community colleges consisting of San Diego City; Mesa; and Palomar Colleges) and also received a 1st class Radio Telephony Operators License issued by the Federal Communications Commission. This meant that I knew what the heck I was doing around radio transmitters and receivers (including the magically Microwave transmission systems). Fiber Optics came down the road later and change the Cable Telecommunications industry in a big way, as well as the implementation of 2-way Cable TV systems. I was also promoted to Supervision so I crossed over to an educational curriculum that applied to leadership and Management. I am currently a Video Engineering Supervisor assisting my team of Central Systems Technicians in providing the most advance and reliable telecommunications network in the industry today. I am also on the San Diego Chapter Board of Directors for the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers. Jacki and I celebrated our 37th wedding anniversary August 4, 2010. We have two children, Rene' Rochelle (31 years) who achieved her Master's from San Diego State University in Public Health; and her Bachelor's in Human Development from the University of California San Diego. Rene' is currently owern of Baypark fitness. Brian Jack (30 years) completed his Emergency Medical Technician Certification Program at Palomar College, San Marco. Brian is a Nationally Registered E.M.T. and is currently serving in the United States Army as a Sergeant "Combat" Medic and recently returned from deployment in the Middle East to continue his medical training as an LPN.
