Roberta's Story

Life Thanks to Classmates, I found my true love. But let me start near the beginning. A native cheesehead born in Green Bay, my family moved around some in Wisconsin and Michigan because my father was in the Coast Guard. I attended Oshkosh North High for 3 years during which time my father retired from the military and began working as an electrician in New London, which prompted us to move and that's where I graduated in 1976. However, I still count ONHS as my alma mater because all of my treasured friends and memories were established in Oshkosh. I've been living in Central Texas since 1978, when I was stationed at Fort Hood. In 1981, when I completed my 4-year contract as a journalist/editor with the U.S. Army, I stayed in Texas. I still pine for the sound of Lake Michigan lapping the shoreline and the smell of lilacs in spring; but you can keep all that snow and shoveling/snow blowing. After the Army I worked for a newspaper in nearby Temple for nearly a year, and then decided it was time to put my military education benefits to work. So I began working on a bachelor's degree in business/marketing. During that time I snagged a great job with the local telephone company in Killeen and worked my way into the public relations department. I loved the people and the work, but after 15 years and three corporate downsizings, I found myself out of a job. So I went back to my roots and started writing again, this time for the Killeen paper. After nearly five years with them as the lifestyle writer/editor I felt it was time for a change, so I went through a state-approved program to become a certified teacher. I su...Expand for more
rvived my first full year (2004-2005 school year) as a second grade classroom teacher. Gosh, I don't remember kids being so mean to each other when I was that age. Wow. Honestly, it has been the toughest paying job I've ever had. Thankfully things have become abit easier each year. Shortly after I completed my time with the Army I married and in 1988, I gave birth to Katy. She is named after my late great-grandmother Kate Bartzen. Katy has a rare disorder called C.H.A.R.G.E. which caused her to be born profoundly deaf, legally blind and facially deformed. Yet despite all of the challenges she faces she has been an active member of the Special Olympics track team, is attending Harker Heights High School and may be moving on soon to the Texas School for the Deaf in Austin. That first marriage didn't last. However, I'm happy to say I was reunited with my high school sweetheart, Bob, and we married this spring (March 30, 2007) by a JP and then in June we tied the knot at our church, First Baptist of Copperas Cove. We'd like to travel to Wisconsin this summer, but we'll have to see how Katy is feeling after her surgery. I'd hoped to attend the ONHS class of '76 30th reunion last summer, but Texas starts school in late August, so I was back to work when the festivities were going on. I hope it was a good time. After all these years I still stay in touch with Linda Ziemer, Jan Salas and Sue Pable, and I would love to hear from some more of my former classmates. Because of my hectic schedule I usually wait until the weekend to write back to folks, so please don't be annoyed if it takes me a couple of days to respond.
