Robin's Story

I was moved by the post of Scott Ellis on the wonders of growing up in the Conejo Valley. Now that I have lived a couple of other places I realize better what a wonderful time it was. I think many of the people we went to high school with remember Jungleland. And I also remember the Conejo Valley days parade and scrambling all over Thousand Oaks Blvd for candy. I'm not sure very many remember, though, what it was like to move to Thousand Oaks in 1962 when there was probably only one stop light in town. For fun, my Dad and I would go see the model homes for all of the new home tracts being built and all of the hills were scrubbed clean to get ready for them. Now when I go home, things look really overgrown by comparison! In the 1960's our moms would let us go out in the mornings and roam all over the hills. Now, if your parents did that, you would end up on national news! Maybe because of all of the fun new homes being built, I ended up going to several schools: Ladera, University, Glenwood, Waverly, Colina, Waverly again, and Newbury Park High School. One of the big shocks in my life was after going to several schools and feeling like I would know everyone at Thousand Oaks High School, my parents moved into Lynn Ranch right before 9th grade and I knew about 3 people at Newbury Park High School. That, however, turned out to be a blessing and my friendships made there have been a blessing. One of the best people I remember early on was Claudia Ellis, Scott's sister, who was so nice to me in Student Government my Sophomore year. She convinced me it was okay to be nice to my parents! Now I judge my friends by who remembers that the Cowboys used to practice in Thousand Oaks. I am still made about what happened to Tom Landry. I don't think people quite believe that my Dad and I used to stand out on the field at CLC and watch them practice with almost no people around, and I would climb on their practice sleds. My Dad invited them to church and I'm not sure any of them ever came, but we loved t...Expand for more
hem anyway. We never did go to the beach that much, a riptide almost swept me away at Malibu. I didn't really like going into Los Angeles that much either. But, Thousand Oaks was just a wonderful tucked-away town to think up all kinds of dreams and projects, and grow up. I'm sure I took it for granted. I should mention one thing that was not my favorite. The schools did not have enclosed hallways. Someone thought that the weather in Thousand Oaks and Newbury Park was always perfect, which it ususally was. However, for a week in the fall, those hot, dry Santa Ana winds blew. I tried putting my hair in pigtails, pinning it back, nothing worked. It was just miserable to be outside. Also, it did get cold and rainy in the winter...and we were still outside. Okay, so it's not walking 6 miles in the snow.... I want to mention Mrs. Meyers who was my teach in 1st grade and, somehow, in 7th grade also. She was like an aunt to me or a guardian angel. Somehow, she was always there when I needed her. I'm sure we all remember our years at Newbury Park High School. Football was really fun when we were there, and the rivalries with Thousand Oaks. Remember the 48-48 tie? As Sophomore class President, my fund-raising project was selling chocolate and on the only hot day in Newbury Park history, I had thousands of dollars worth of chocolate sitting on the football field...aaah memories. Those of you who need to forgive me, I hope you have by now.. Okay, so where am I now? I am Professor of Public Service at Oklahoma State University - Oklahoma City. I went to law school and am an attorney, but this is how I use my degree. I am married to Eddie Scott and we have 2 grown children, one new grandbaby and one on the way! I didn't think we would ever have a grandbaby, and yet, here they come! My parents live in Desert Hot Springs by Palm Springs, so I visit Southern California quite a bit and love the desert. If you come to Oklahoma, my phone number is (405)722-7218, and I would love to see you! Robin
