Robin's Story

I went to Robinson Elementary beginning in 2nd grade. In November after we started 9th grade at Banks, my mom moved us to Los Angeles. Big culture shock -- arrived in wrap around skirt, socks, and Hush Puppies to find straight skirts, nylons, and flats. Plus, forget high school, I had to go to "Junior High." We only stayed in LA a year and then moved back to Oregon, where I was born. Moved to Eugene where I started high school again. Graduated from Thurston High (the same one) and went to junior college and University of Oregon until I panicked that a good southern girl should be married before she's 20, and he did look good in a baseball uniform. Went back to college after my divorce and two children (son and daughter) and became a paralegal. Loved working in the legal field. Worked for D.A. then private practice, then for circuit court judge. Moved to Yakima after I remarried in 86, and had my third baby, Alexann, almost 15 years ago. At my 30th high school reunion, I got the life achievement award for having a 2 year old. Have been back to Alabama several times and actually found a couple of classmates years ago. Would love to come to a reunion, and would love to hear from any of you who remember me. Funny how those grade school and high school memories are so vivid. Gees, I sound a hundred. I'm now a guardian ad litem in juvenile court for kids in state dependency. Very emotional but challenging and rewarding. Actually, I'm still trying to figure out what I want to do when I grow up. o move back to Oregon where my mom, son, daughter, and four granddaughters are. My youngest daughter is in 9th grade now, having gone to the same school through 8th grade. Her 8th grade graduation really made me remember ours. Love to travel; I do step aerobics, and try to be with friends alot. Mr. Murphy didn't instill a love of science, but Mrs. Summerford gave me a love of history and reading. Not sure what Orris Baker gave me. I'm a big movie fan. Love Broadway and have been to NYC five times. I'm not enjoying any part of getting older -- can't hardly say that out loud, and refuse to ever tell anyone how old I am. Still love to dance. Never did learn to swim after my drowning in Kathy Hemphill's pool at our 8th grade party; good thing she had an older, lifeguard brother. I proudly confess to having worked on President Obama's campaign -- stay with me now. But I still consider myself a moderate. I was unpopular with my family in Alabama when I questioned segregation as a child, and the marches and bombings that were happening as we left Alabama stayed with me. I've had very different experiences than if I'd not moved away. I love the south and so enjoy getting together with my huge family back there, although they've all moved from Birmingham. It takes me about ten minutes to get my accent back. I really hope to hear from many Robinson and Banks classmates. So many names keep coming to me as I write this. I'm sure if we'd had email and texting back then, I would have kept in touch with my friends.
