Robin's Story
Life
I left RPV in the fall of 1977 to attend college in San Diego. I was very eager to get on with my life. I first attended San Diego Mesa College and then on to San Diego State. I graduated in 1982 with a degree in Sports Medicine. I was awarded All-American in Springboard Diving in 1978. It is my greatest accomplishment!
I worked as an Orthopedic Technologist in the operating room, orthopedic clinics and hospitals for 18 years. I challenged the Orthopaedic Physician Assistant exam and passed in 1992 but after MANY sleepness nights working long hours I decided to try a new career.
I am a technical representative for Stryker Orthopaedics, a knee and hip replacements company, for 11 years. I work in the operating room during the implantation of the component and to answer any questions the surgeon might have. Jack Nicholas, the golfer, has our new ceramic hip as seen on the TV commercials!
My husband is a chef at the Anaheim Hilton and we have been married for 20 years. We love the Green Bay Packers, traveling to watch them at least once during the season. A recent trip to Lambeau Field was awesome.
I am very involved in road cycling and I ride my bicycle from San Francisco to LA every year to participate in the AIDSLifeCycle. This year will be my 5th trip. It is a 7 day trip and I do it for my friend, Ruedi, positive with HIV and Lisa Waterman, who died from the disease. It is an incredible...Expand for more
experience and a beautiful way to see California.
College
I started at San Diego Mesa College with a degree in Clothing Design. I decided to switch to Nutrition when I transferred to San Diego State but after a few classes, I knew I would never eat again if I continued in this major. I switched to Sports Medicine and I got my bachleor's degree in May 1982. I was a springboard diver for both Mesa College and San Diego State, winning the All-American Award in Diving at Mesa in 1979.
Workplace
I graduated from San Diego State University with a degree in Sports Medicine and was unable to get a job in my major without further education.I was not interested in the graduate program in Sports Medicine at SDSU and I heard about an Orthopedic Technology program at Grossmont College. I graduated in 1984 and was employed at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in the cast room. This was a county hospital and I had my eyes opened to a whole new world. I learned so much in the 1 1/2 years I was there. I took a job with an Orthopedic Surgeon closer to my home but felt unfulfilled in an office situation. I got the perfect job at FHP working in the clinic, hospital and as an assistant in the operating room. This gaving me the invaluable experience to arrive at my next career in medical implant sales. I sell hip and knee replacement and work with the surgeons in the operating room during the surgery. I love the excitement of it.
