Robin's Story
While I have never been keen on having my picture taken, I don't mind this one, taken the day I graduated from Northern Arizona University, with a BFA in Jewelry/Metalsmithing. Would someone please tell Mr. Hartsough, who told my mother I was not college material, and might not even make it through high school, that I graduated summa cum laude with a 3.89 GPA (I got a B in Watercolor....it was a gift I accepted with gratitude).
I think it is a measure of my success in blending that at the Ten Year Reunion for the SPHS Class of 1969, only about a dozen people knew who I was....I spent more time with my horses than I did in school activities. I finished my last year in the juniors with a national championship (AQHA Western Riding), a reserve championship in Pacific Coast (All Around), and the All Around Championship in the California Amateur Quarter Horse Association.....I don't regret one minute, or a single dollar.
I graduated from PCC, which I loved, in 1975, with an AA in Art, and accepted an athletic grant to shoot on the Archery team at CSULA. We came in second at the NCAAs, by TWELVE POINTS!!! out of 2,009...Expand for more
. Wanting to get to the Olympic Trials is not the most compelling reason to be in school, but, oh well, so when Jimma Carter pulled the plug on our participation in 1980, leaving me with three of my four qualifying rounds in the bag, with reservations for the tournament in Vegas the only thing standing between me and the trials (and can someone explain to me how our not going to the 1980 Games fixed ANYTHING in Afghanistan???), I quit in a huff and got a job.
After bouncing around in advertising design for a few years, I started my own company, EFButton, and did pretty well with it, at least until I moved to Flagstaff and the Post Office lost my forwarding address.
I went back to school, so I could teach, but actually, I prefer teaching non-credit classes, to people who actually want to learn, and do not start out thinking silversmithing is an easy 3 units.
I ran the classroom at Michaels for seven LONG years, and am now working part time for a trophy company, designing awards, and doing my jewelry.
While I love the clean air, and being close to the Canyon, I miss California and the beach....I wanna come home!
