Robin's Story

Life My sons are currently 10 and 7. Ty will be a fifth grader on the A/B honor roll in the fall. He was diagnosed with diabetes right before he started kindergarten (the same age as I was diagnosed). He is living with his diabetes and actually knows how to count carbohydrates. Recently, he began giving his own insulin injections. It truly is a challenge having a child with diabetes. I feel fortunate that I have experienced so much with my own challenge of living with diabetes so that I can take better care of him. Ty loves soccer and plays in both the fall and spring seasons for Frederick County Parks and Rec. My youngest son, Cole, is a ball of energy. I was worried that he would never talk, but now he is never quiet. He is interested in every sport imaginable and even took tap and ballet this past year. He danced in his first recital in May and danced the part of Aladdin in both his tap and ballet number. He also plays Upward Basketball. I am so thankful that both boys like school and are both A/B students. It's me that hates all of the homework they have! My husband, Al, is a supervisor at a water reclamation facility in Ashburn, VA. He works swing shift and that throws me for a loop sometimes. We pass each other a lot during the school year, but when he's off, he has either three, four or seven days off at a time which is nice especially during the summer. We are taking short two and three day trips this summer with the boys as traveling any distance is too expensive at the moment due to the gas prices. We went to Hershey Park last week and are planning a trip to the Lancaster, Gettysburg area at the end of July. Both of the boys must be part fish as they love the water so day trips to Mommom and Pap Pap's house in Keyser are frequent. :) I am currently serving as the gifted resource teacher for the three high schools in Frederick County, VA. My home base is in the same school I have been in since 1993, Sherando High School. I also have students at James Wood and Millbrook High Schools. I place gifted juniors and seniors with professionals in the community so the students can explore career interests. They work side by side with these mentors and either find that they do or do not want to pursue the profession they have selected. It is a wonderful way for the students to apply what they have learned in the school setting to the real world. Real world application and s...Expand for more
tudent choice are the operative phrases for this class. I love it, I am out in the community, and the students are treated as professionals. It feels good to be able to provide them with this kind of opportunity and to guide them through professional situations. I will be doing some presentations at conferences in Virginia as well as other locations as I am invited. I will be presenting a session on managing a mentor program for gifted juniors and seniors at the Virginia Association for the Gifted conference in October. I presented last year at a national conference in Charlotte, NC as well as the Northern Virginia Conference for Gifted and Talented Education. I was also invited to speak to a gifted cohort from George Mason University. I will continue to work toward obtaining my master's degree in Advanced Studies in Teaching and Learning through George Mason University. I anticipate completion of the program in December 2008. I continue to serve as Sherando High School's Interact Club Adviser. This is a community based organization sponsored by the Rotary. The club is the school's largest and most active service organization. This past school year, the Interact Club participated in over 90 service opportunities. Providing the students with opportunities to serve others in the community will hopefully help them to realize what an impact they have in the community. Transfer of that into their adult lives will ensure a better community for our area in the future. Our last project of the year was taking a group of WWII Veterans to the WWII Memorial in Washington DC. The trip was free of charge to the 40 some veterans and their spouses. Our club provided lunch, water, and guides for each veteran. Each student participant was paired with a veteran to help them around at the memorial. We were able to convince a local charter bus company to donate two buses. What an incredible experience that was! College Well, at this point in my life I am a graduate student at George Mason University, and I have only one class to go! Yea! I completed my endorsement in Gifted Education in fall 2006. I will complete my master's degree in Advanced Studies in Teaching and Learning in December 2008. It's difficult to make it happen any faster while working full time in the school system, running a household, taking care of my two young boys, working out, doing community service and having a life! :)
