Robin's Story

I fondly remember my years at RHS. I feel my education there prepared me well for college. My band memories are my fondest. I also fondly remember Mr. Theilmeyer and summer field biology. Since graduating from RHS I have been busy with family and school. I attended Eastern Kentucky University after high school and earned a BS in medical technology. I worked at UK medical center in Lexington, Ky where I met my husband, Michael. Michael is a professor of civil engineering and a good southern boy from Tennessee. The week after we were married, we moved to Columbia, SC where Michael is a professor at the University of SC. I returned to school and earned a BS in civil engineering and worked at the US Geological Survey in Columbia. However, I missed the medical field and applied and was accepted to the Univ. of SC School of Medicine. I did my residency in pediatrics at a local teaching hospital. I joined a private practice for three years but this was not my favorite type of medicine. I then took a position as attending physician in the local Children's Emergency Center at the hospital where I did my residency. I worked in the Children's Emergency Center for 16 years and enjoyed it, especially the orthopedics, but it is a high stress job and I burned out. Three years ago I returned to school at USC and earned a Master of Arts degree in Secondary Biology Education (would Mr. Theilmeyer be proud?) and have been teaching high school for the past two years. I started out teaching health science at one high school but transferred to another high school in the same district and now teach biology. I am much happi...Expand for more
er at the new school. While in medical school, my husband and I adopted our son, Matthew. He is 30 years old now and a sous chef at a restaurant in Atlanta, Georgia. After I finished my pediatric residency, my husband and I were foster parents to twin girls, Maria and Lydia, who were the victims of abuse and neglect. I learned about them when I was working in an after hours clinic associated with the emergency room. Four years after they were placed with us at the age of 14 months, their adoption was finalized. Maria decided she did not want to attend college and is now the front desk manager at a local gym.. Lydia earned a B.S. degree in graphic design from Lander University. After graduation she had difficulty in finding a job and took an internship in Nome, Alaska with the U.S. National Parks Dept. Now she is back in Columbia and was able to find a graphic design job as the sign coordinator at the University of South Carolina. Our family is completed with a cat and a dog. Luckily I married a farm boy who likes animals. I was never much of a dog person but our dog is a border collie/black lab mix and is very sweet and very smart. She is a good first dog for me and I am the one who does all the training with her. I enjoy living in the South very much and now my iced tea has to be sweet, but the heat can be stifling. A coworker described Columbia as "a screen door away from hell." That is pretty accurate. I have also become a fan of NASCAR and we attend the annual race in Darlington every year. One of my husband's former students is the engineer for the #31 car in the Monster Energy series. May 2013
