Robin's Story
Hello,
I am Robin Barnett Thomas. I was born in Avalon just outside of Pgh, Pa. March 22, 1955. I was one of 6 children born to Harvey and Wilma Barnett. We lived on Cleveland Ave since I was 18 months old. I raised 4 children on my own and know the importance of reading. While traveling to different parts of the United States with my husband Bill in the 101st Airborne, (now deceased since 1984) I always made sure no matter where we lived, there were no less than two bookshelves full of books. Most were purchsed in second stores and yard sales. But they were still BOOKS. I have always had a dream of publishing at least 10 books by the age of 55 and I have 2 published already. You can see them and purchse them on the website and locally in Northwest Georgia, where I have lived by my younger brother, Scott, for over 20 years.
My two favorite stories are the "Wizard of Oz" and "The Never-Ending Story." Both stories deal with dreams, memories, reading and never ending love. When I lost my husband at the early age of 28, it hit me that I had to raise my children myself. Working two jobs most of the time and not getting my first car till years later...never asking for a handout.. our family always had a quiet time together that to us meant reading books. I read to my children nightly until at least one of them were able to read and take over a story or two. To me this was the most important time of the day. Many times we would take turns reading the books that my children had picked out. Now I am the proud grandmother of 4 beautiful grandbabies all boys and again make sure that there are books around for them to read in my home and in theirs. Whenever they want to read to me, I always make the time. One thing I will say to you and is a quote of my own....
"Time is precious and so is the mind of a child. You can either help it grow or watch it sink."
Our lives still consist of one obstacle after another, and together we have always handled them..... I will always believe that the one hour a day we had spent together reading in the early lives of my children is what made them all appreciate the value of knowledge and graduate from high school. I feel that reading had to be interesting to both the reader and the listener. For that reason I decided to take my real live pets, put their lives in my stories and touch the hearts of children with them the same way my children have touche...Expand for more
d mine. In my books I feature my real life iguana, Jasper George Thomas the First, My big brown dog, Sha-Sha, and my Pit Bull, Gator. All have gone to Pet Heaven now....but the memories that I have with them are forever in my heart. My stories will touch the hearts of the young and old and also the hearts in-between. To me a good book is a learning tool and a family who reads together stays together, as I have proven in the closeness of my own family.
Now as I am in my 50's I care for my parents in their older ages. I am one of the lucky ones that have both Mom, Dad, all my brothers & sisters still here on this earth with me. I spent every hour I can with Mom & Dad. We talk about the olden days alot. My brother Scott lives just a few miles away from me with his wife Mary. They help us alot around here. All my children but the youngest live within a 50 mile radius of me and that is so nice. We share all our Holidays and Birthdays together. My boyfriend of the past 8 yrs...works on the KCS Railroad as a Safety Inspector and is gone most of the time to the midwest. This is so hard on us but it keeps me at home taking care of Mom & Dad. We talk all the time and I go out to see him in the midwest as much as I can. Most of the time when my other sisters & brothers come into town and I know someone is here, it takes the worry off of my mind. I figure they took care of me all my younger days and I will give my older days to care for them.
Scott and I have been close all our lives. It makes alot of sense that we would be together in our older days. He moved here just almost as long as he has been out of school. In all the 41 states I have lived or traveled, Georgia is the most like Pa.
It has four seasons, the mountains, lakes and streams. The wildlife the weather and the friendly people. LOL sonetime to friendly. LOL. Anyway... This is where I chose to live and don't regret it. I was in Avalon in 2001 Matthew (my boyfriend) took me there. I met up with Shelly (Bracken) McAllister. It was nice seeing her again. I was hoping to find alot more people but was not able to. I am hoping to go back in the year 2010 and hope to meet up with a few more people. Take you to dinner and keep in touch. Well if I don't quit writing you will never be able to see the well the book I just wrote.... Below I will post some pictures of my Children
