Robin's Story

Life 2008 is going so quick this year, it's mid-July and it's been 32 years since the class of 76 graduated from High School. Some one who I'd been thinking about all these years, David Werme finally showed up on my visit list on Classmates.com. I've not been able to chat much with him but it was sure nice to know that we both had been thinking of each other. One of these days we'll talk and maybe see each other again to catch up on lost time. I'm 50 years young with two adult children ages 24 & 27 years old with a four year old grandson. Single and retired, enjoying life a day at a time. I've accomplish a lot since graduation from High School, and still more goals to work on. Never to old to try something new. School Memories of high school in my time were; the ability to smoke on campus, the ability to leave campus to go to McDonald's, or Burger King. Now a days 20 to 25 years later kids are no longer to smoke on campus, legally can't smoke anyway, but they do anyway, there is closed campus for all but the seniors in high school. My favorite teacher I have to say was my first grade teacher Mrs. Mc Carthey who taught at Sierra Vista in Paradise Hills. The school was new at that time and had just open up a year or two before I started. Mrs. Marthey remembered me when I was in the news in 1978 when dealing with women in the Navy and on board ships. She sent me a Christmas Card while I was overseas telling me I was one of her favorite students in 1963. Boy that's telling my age. Then in high school I had a friend name Fred who took me out to Speedway park once located on South Eubank and taught me how to drive a car and on a race track at that. A race track that my father once raced on. College Albuquerque T-VI, Northwestern University, and Military training. Workplace My field is Dental Hygiene, Military I joined the U.S. Navy, March 1978, went to Boot camp in Orlando,Florida. Schooling in San Diego, San Antonio, Portsmouth,Virginia, Great Lakes (Chicago). My training consisted of Dental Assistant, Dental Hygiene, Operating Room Tech., and the Morque. I was one of the first females to be assigned to a military ship (1978) and the first ...Expand for more
in the Dental field. The ship I was station on was one of two remaining repair ships in the Navy at that time, name was the USS Vulcan AR-5. The ship was 49 years old at that time and one of few that still had wooden decks. There were 60 women station on the ship out of a crew of 800. Now a days women are on board ships through out the Navy to include combat ships. When I was on board ship women were not allowed on combat ships, only non combat. The ships port was out of Norfolk,Virginia at that time, and from what I under stand has been decomissioned since then. We cruised the east coast as well as the North Alantic and the Mediterran Seas. I was stationed not only on board ship, but was stationed out of Norfolk,Virginia, San Antionio, Texas, Agana,Guam (just south of Japan) and my last duty station was Great Lakes (Chicago) before medically retiring in August of 1988. To blow off steam I usually go out and do yard work, find things around the house to do and/or go play Bingo, go for a car ride, something spur on the moment that can get my mind off what is in need of relief of stress or blow of steam. If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have good pay, good hours, and flexability to be able to deal with the day-to-day. Heros are people who have a gone trough good, bad, and indiferrent and are able to talk about it, learn something from it, then get on with life. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is David Werme, because He was such a nice person to me in High School, and we kinda of lost touch after graduation. If I could improve my home, I'd remodel my kitchen and add on a sun room. My dream home would be paid for and owe nothing on it.. My kids keep me young at times and are always keeping me on my toes. They were there for me when I had cancer and never let me give up. I'm six plus years remission now -2008- and I still look forward to life. If I won $100 million, I'd give enough of it to pay off bills, then spend the rest on traveling, camper and family. My style of clothing fits the figure I have now verses what i looked like 10, 20, 30 years ago. Just need to get rid of the gray hair that is appearing.
