Phyllis Lynn's Story
It seems like the shake ups just keep coming. At least we get a chance to catch our breath before the next surprise jumps out at us.
In November, I visited the doctor for the routine stuff. A few tests later, it turns out that I have cancer. An extremely rare type of melanoma. So rare that the numbers are like 1 in 25 million melanomas are the type I have.
I finished the first round of chemo in early January as well as radiation. Surgery should take place in early February. Then more chemo. So far, I still have my hair, but it is likely that the second round of chemo will take care of that.
It seems that the move we made to Texas in 2006 to be closer to Rusty's parents has another side. We are within 20 miles of University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and I am seeing the number one melanoma surgeon in the world which is very reassuring.
My job at the PEO I work for is secure and waiting for me. The company is incredibly supportive and very generous. In the meantime, it is a good thing that we are best friends because Rusty and I are together all the time. We play lots of cards, watch movies and go for walks when I feel up to it. He is enjoying the retired life which is great right now as it allows him to be so supportive of me.
Rusty and I are very happily married. Each of us has 2 boys and a girl from previous marria...Expand for more
ges. His oldest son is a third year student at the Maine Maritime Academy studying to be an engineer. His second son it graduating from Air Force basic training at the end of January. We are hoping to visit him in San Antonio for the weekend of graduation. His daughter is a senior in high school.
My oldest son, Kevin, now 28, lives in Virginia Beach with his wife, son and daughter. My daughter, Katie, almost 24, is still living at home and working in management at Sonic. David Lee, pushing 16, is growing up fast. It is hard to believe that my youngest is the same age I was when I met most of you. Thinking about that really puts things into perspective.
We still have the motorcycles but are seriously contemplating selling mine. We can ride double on his and still get where we are going. He rides a '94 Honda Goldwing. It is beautiful. I have an '04 Honda Shadow that I got for my birthday almost 4 years ago.
We found some friends who like motorcycles, card playing, camping and such. We get together with them as often as we can. We like to ride together to see the sites and find neat little places to lunch, mostly just daytrips.
The schnauzers haven't been camping with us yet. We still sleep in the back of the pickup with a camper shell on it. Hopefully, a fifth wheel RV is in the future and they will have room to come with us.
