Robyn's Story

I've had many adventures since high school. I met my husband in November of 1971. He went to Viet Nam. Our daughter was born the following September. We re-met in 1992 and have been married since 1994. Our oldest granddaughter was 2 weeks old cried constantly during our wedding ceremony . Between the two of us we have 6 living children, 19 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Two of our sons married older women with children. They are spread out between Washington, Indiana and Iowa. My Mom still lived in the same house in Buena Park until she died in 2018. My Dad died two years after he retired. My sister, Ruth, moved to Nevada with her husband, and my two brothers still live in California. I went back to school in 2000 to become a teacher, however, there was no money in teaching, in Iowa, at that time. My husband and I drove a semi-truck all over the US. We have been to every state, except Hawaii, and in all but 4 provinces in Canada. We built our house in Iowa, in a little town just south of where John Wayne was born. We lived there for four years. About the second year, the oldest son, his wife and three children moved in. We were gone most of the time and when we did come home it is such a joy to have children, especially little ones, running around. Here's an update. We sold our house in Iowa. Made a whole $38 on that deal. That was a few years ago. We saved and bought a little house in the state of Washington. We had to totally gut it and are in the process of making it look like a house again. The neighborhood is quiet. Everybody watches the house when we are gone. It has a lot of bad history because it was used as a drug house. The neighbors are glad we bought it so things can settle down. It has a huge backyard so we will have a super garden. My hubby had a heart attack last Christmas and then pneumonia in March. He now requires oxygen 24/7. I quit driving in October due to a bad hip. I’ve always been heavy but have to loose weight before I can get hip and knees replaced. The last 20 lbs has been a nightmare. In February of this year our oldest and his f...Expand for more
amily moved back in with us. They will be taking care of us as we grow old. It’s nice to have them back with us again. Their two boys are grown with families of their own. Our granddaughter is a joy to have around. She’s a teenager now. The five of us have been living in our fifth wheel. They have helped fix our house and we will finally all be able to move in within a few weeks. It’s taken us five years but the wait has been worth it. I am just looking forward to being home and getting started on the next chapter of our lives. I am on Facebook Robyn Cornett Burnside. Here’s an update! We moved into our house in 2019. It’s still not finished but it’s livable. Still a lot of work to do. We got hit with Covid before we knew it was Covid. I almost died ( no joke). The whole house was sick but we are all still here and living. Our granddaughter is a junior now. And has a boyfriend so that’s been an ‘adventure’. She is doing great. I just barely survived the teens with my kids and now I’m doing it again. Some things change, some stay the same. One of our grandsons was into drugs and living on the street. He slept on our couch till he got it together. He now has a girlfriend who’s a teacher and he has a “grownup” job in an office. My husband is in the final stages of COPD and he has Alzheimer’s. That has been a roller coaster of adjustments. Mood swings and medication. Good days and bad. I thank Jesus for every day I have. Friends and family. My granddaughter thinks I’m wise but it’s life experiences that has given me the wisdom to share. Life is a lesson. Learn something new everyday and pass it on. Jesus said the greatest commandment of all was to love one another as he loved us. Update! My youngest son , John, was riding his motorcycle to work on Thursday, June 1, 2023,, in Elkhart, Indiana, when a horse escaped thru a fence and John hit it. John was killed instantly. Broken neck. He always put family first. He was loved by everyone. He was a mentor to many and will be greatly missed. He was my baby boy and always will be. We will wait for the next sunrise.
