Rockne's Story

When I left Madras for college at the University of Oregon I was unsure of my future so I left college and joined the Marine Corps. Completed boot camp and went to several schools for electronics and equipment repair. Eventually became a central office repairman at Quantico, VA. From there I went to recruiters school and spent almost a year recruiting in the West Chicago area. I applied for OCS and was accepted. I was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in September of 1967. After Basic School I went to Communications Officers School and then to Vietnam where I served with the First Logistics Headquarters Battalion as a Communications Officer. I came back in one piece and was stationed at MCAS Yuma. While there I took some classes at the Junior College at Yuma, AZ . I decided to leave the Marine Corps and resigned my commission effective June 30, 1970. At that time I had a wife, an adopted son and one on the way. We moved the Las Vegas, NV where I worked for the phone company while attending the University of Nevada. In 1975 I graduated with a BS in accounting. Worked for a couple of small companies and eventually started my own income tax preparation firm that I had for 20 years. I sold that and went to do what I always wanted to do and that was to be a carpenter. I did that for about seven years until I realized I was too old for that kind of work. I went to work for a construction scheduling firm as their office manager in 2002. In the mean time my wife (C...Expand for more
armen) and I were looking for a place to build our retirement home. That is how we ended up in Cold Creek, NV. We started building in 2002 and completed our home in 2004. In 2007 we both retired and moved into our retirement home. We are 50 miles out of the city and living off the grid. All of the schooling I received in the Marine Corps in electronics and equipment repair became valuable in maintaining our solar system. We have both been blessed with good health though my legs are starting to give out which I believe is courtesy of agent orange from Vietnam. Haven't been able to convince the VA of that. This is another area where raised beds for gardening are real handy. No getting down and then back up. I build my raised beds so I can sit on the side to pull weeds and harvest my vegetables. I joke with my few neighbors that the only way I will leave this mountain permanently is in a body bag. Those of you that live out away from a lot of people and have the pleasure of gardening will understand why I love it here. In February of 2021 we relocated to Woodland Park, CO to be closer to family. I am a colon cancer survivor and Carmen is a skin cancer survivor. We figured we no longer had the strength and energy to maintain our off grid life style. We have two kids, Seven grand kid and eight great grand kids with one more on the way. I should include five spouses of grand kids and two spouses of the kids. I have plenty of help in my old age. My quiver is full.
