Rod's Story

Life I am "retired" from the US Air Force after over 23 years serving my country. My last duty day was 24 April and I was officially retired on 1 Sep 09. Gail and I have been married for 25 years. Kristen is a Senior at Texas Tech University, and Brenden is a Freshman at DeVry University. I am still a computer geek and spend much of my free time on-line learning to improve my web design and graphics design skillz. My son, Brenden, and I have successfully completed the following SCUBA certifications: Open Water, Boat Diver, Enriched Air (NITROX), Night Diver and Advanced Open Water. Diving is so cool! School Since graduating high school I've married, have 2 children. I stopped at a Bachelor degree, but am contemplating taking the 13 classes I need to complete my Master's program. Workplace Life is interesting! I've held jobs from fast food to mechanics and delivery and spent over 23+ years working for Uncle Sam. I entered the AF in 1986 as a Inventory Management Specialist (Supply troop). Back then Supply consisted of 3 different career fields, the "X0s" who were the office type workers, the "X1s" who were the "box kickers" aka warehouse workers and the "X2s" who worked in the Supply C...Expand for more
omputer Room. I was an "X0" for about 9 years when I decided computers were my cup of tea so I cross-trained into the X2 career field. Hind sight being 20/20 I realized I should have chosen a different type of computer field but didn't. I did this when the AF decided to merge the X0 and X1 fields together leaving just X1s and X2s. In 2006 my career field came full circle when the X1 and X2s were merged together so I, again, am a "Supply troop". I worked in the civilian sector for 9 months as a client server programmer for Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene, TX, but am now back in my old office working Civil Service. Military I look back on my time in the Air Force and realize how good it was to me. There were many unpleasant things, things I didn't like and wished I could have changed, but the good outweighed the bad. Sometimes I felt my military service hadn't measured up to the things my brother and sister have done, but realize being in the military is an honorable thing. I grew so much as a person and got to experience so many things I would NEVER have got to had I not joined such as traveling to different parts of the world and flying in a fighter aircraft, to name just a couple.
