Rod's Story

ROD [ROCKY] BANKHEAD - [Updated March 3, 2014] after a nice, surprise Birthday Message from an old [ah . . .great friend and great guy] - Joel Harris 1966 - 1970 - Served overseas and in the U.S. in the USAF for four years. On a Friday I left the Air Force as one of the youngest Staff Sergeants in the core. Then I started work for Pacific Telephone on the following Monday. Way far back - went to Grossmont Jr. College nights for 6 years - reached within 3 or 6 units of 4 different AA Degrees. Still don't have one because my career was just fine without a degree. Bumped into Johnny Little and Frank Shoenthal there. Great guys!! Married & divorced my life's mistake - Jan Matson [65] - except my two sons that have blessed me every day of their lives. Began the first genuinely happy years of my adult life [21 years ago & counting]. We always knew we [Susan Merriam ('66) and me] were meant to be together since the day we first met so many, many years ago. Living a true love story really is a very beautiful thing. She is absolutely the most amazing human being walking the earth in my lifetime. Susie & I have 3 wonderful sons and 3 beautiful daughters [in law], and 9 grand kids (8 boys & 1 princess). We are a very close family of 17, and being grandparents is our most favorite activity. I had an unscheduled health stop in 2003 from a heart attack and and a few strokes. I had to retire after 34 years in middle management positions with Pacific Telephone, AT&T, and Verizon. I had a great career. retiring as the Western Region [13 States] Operations Manager for Verizon Communications. Great job and great career. Left a few times - I was recruited to turn-around a Cellular Phone Company which took me two-years to do - and I sold the company. Then a second departure was being recruited to be the Telecommunications Director for the County of San Diego - which took almost 4 years. On both occasions - I was welcomed back immediately by either AT&T or Verizon Communication - without any loss in retirement income, etc.. Very fortunate. Susie retired 4 years ago after almost 40 very successful years in management positions with Pacific Telephone, AT&T, and as a Communications Director for Wells Fargo Bank. We had a cabin in Big Bear Lake for several years until about 2111. Then - my health forced me back to sea level so we sold the cabin to our youngest son Darin and his wife & 4 sons. He still has it. He's on the Ski Patrol at Bear Mountain Resort [he gets free lift tickets for his whole family] so we get to see the family more during the winters. Our oldest son, Michael [45] is a very successful Commercial Real Estate Broker in La Jolla. He's married to Nichole [also a very successful Account Exec with a local publishing house] and two sons - Rowan & Logan. Troy our middle son [44] is a Doctor [PHD] and h...Expand for more
as his own research lab on the campus of Washington State University - with a staff - devoted to finding the cure to Lime Disease. He's also an Associate Professor teaching Molecular Biology. [Proof - an apple doesn't fall too far from his Dad - I mean tree] :) He is married to Lendi and they have 2 sons [Dalton & Quinn] and my princess Kyra. Our youngest son Darin [42] owns his own Cellular Telephone Company and has really, really done well. He's married to Nicole [Yes we have two daughter's named the same - I call them 1 & 2] They have 4 sons - Taylor, Garrett, Jadon and Ethan. After my health recovered 100% - last August - we left Rancho Bernardo and bought a home back up in Big Bear Lake - so now we a full-timers. Absolutely heaven for us. Susie and I just can't seem to stop smiling at each other. In the last 21 years - Susie and I have owned homes in South Mission Beach, Mount Woodson [Ramona], San Clemente, Indio, Escondido, two homes in Rancho Bernardo and now Big Bear Lake is it - we enjoyed every move and home we have had - but we're here to stay put. Since retiring - I've been pursuing my life's passion as a writer.. My first effort was a Short Story titled "Blades." It is a true story - a mystery/thriller that I lived through and played a part in during my Air Force years. It also had some scars from my boyhood and rough family life - so I waited 40 years to write it until after my precious Mom passed away. I actually wrote it in a specific format that is intended to market it as a story for a major motion picture. It was published and for sale at Kindle Books on Amazon.com for about a year then I pulled it. Still a big dreamer - 14 months ago - I finished my first fiction novel [347 pages], "Moments" inspired by the song of the same name by the recording Country group Emerson Drive. I tried shopping it on my own but the "book" publishing business is super hard to break into. Now I 'm shopping it to a few literary agents in New York - hoping to score on this one. I love, love being an author. This is a great book and I'm not discouraged at all!! Next book - an unauthorized biography of Tallulah Bankhead - Movie & Stage Star - Grandfather was Speaker of the House - Dad was the Senator that got Highway 8 built - and she's my cousin. Trivia -On the corner stone of the old US Grant Hotel [downtown San Diego] there used to be a plaque - it read "Terminus - Bankhead Highway", because the old plaza in downtown SD was the end of Interstate Highway 8 - the first highway from coast to coast. My biggest heartbreak. I lost my very best friend - Tony Eulette - [Crawford - 1965] We were cousins and we were true brothers. Not a day goes by without my heart aching to see him. Susie & I have only very fond memories of our years with all of our Crawford friends and we wish you all the very best!!
