Roger's Story

I've been working in the printing/graphics field since graduating from NASH. Took a stab at college in '82, but wasn't that thrilled with it. I've been singing and playing guitar in bands and solo since '82. Since then, a beautiful daughter, who graduated from music college last year and is now going back for her masters, came along. Recently my interest in illustration and painting has been rekindled, which is nice. I always wanted to be a comic book artist in my younger days, until I went to a comic book convention sometime in the '70s, and realized what a dorky audience comic books had, and said to heck with that. Now I sing in front of a bunch of drunks in bars. Hmmmm... When I need to blow off steam, I play music, whether on the stereo or my own instruments. Or watch a good movie. Or a bad one even! I don't know about the wildest thing I did in school, but one of the goofiest things I did was to trim my fingernails like little claws once, and I would go up to people and scratch them. I was told the assistant baseball coach made some comment to the baseball team about me being weird because of that. He ended up in jail for child molestation, so you decide which one of us is the weird one. I suppose you could say I'm obsessed with music. I have a huge record/CD collection, as well as a nice guitar collection. If I could improve my home, I'd remodel the whole house and add on a large screened-in porch. Scratch that. I'd just sell it and buy a new one! What have I learned from my daughter? A lot! Whether it's being reminded of things I'd forgotten from my youth, or learning new things because of her. The child is father to the man, right? Or in this case, MOTHER to the man. Which teacher would I love to see again? Mrs. Pridgen, our art teacher. She was the coolest. I remember once when I was complaining about some art project we had to do, and she said "You know what I like about you Roger? You're always smiling, even when you gripe." Touche. If I won $100 million, I'd quit my job, pay off all my bills, buy a new house with a recording studio stocked with every musical instrument I might need, set some aside for my daughte...Expand for more
r and her future, set some aside for my own future, and set up a fund to help people out in a medical financial crisis situation. My current age is 61. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now were ancient. I was so completely wrong. I remember at one point in my 40s actually looking forward to turning 50. There just seemed to be something cool about that. What's the weirdest job I ever had? Probably singing in bars to a bunch of drunks! Although once when I was about 16 I spent the entire night (11 pm till 7 am) painting in Bowers Thrift Store. Pretty weird for a 16 year old working all through the night back in 1970! Where were the child labor laws then? If I had one do-over? Hmmm. I could name quite a few, but none here, thank you. In 10 years, I hope to be still alive. I'm going to get there by eating and breathing. My oldest friend? I believe that would be Bill Gray, formerly known as Billy Gray. He was the first friend I made when I moved to this area, starting 4th grade. We had the same quirky humor, and still do, over 50 years later. What about me would surprise everyone at our high school reunion? I'm not as bashful as I used to be. Or am I? My first job was at the North Augusta STAR, where I got paid $1.65 an hour in 1972. What I remember most about it is... "Isn't white merely the absence of all colors?" "Did you frighten that dog?" "You'll stay here until the job gets done." "Don't you EVER do that again! I'm SERIOUS!" The bucket we used to put old chemicals in, among other things. Trish getting her hair caught in the typewriter roller. Setting Greg on fire one Christmas. Getting stranded overnight because of the big snow in 1973 - everyone else was allowed to leave early because of the snow, but I HAD to stay and finish a job, thus getting stranded there. Some of that night was good though... having a radio and memories of hearing songs like "Do It Again" by Steely Dan, "Me And Mrs. Jones" by Billy Paul, "Oh Babe What Would You Say" by Hurricane Smith, and quite a few others.. The boss's terrier getting treated better than the employees! Telling the boss's wife off when I quit. Ah, good times. Good times.
