Roger's Story

After graduating from high school, I went two years at the College of Southern Idaho and graduated with an associate degree. I went to Idaho State University for one semester and majored in Microbiology. I ran out of money and had to leave college to work to earn more money for college. It was a bad time to give up my 2S draft designation. Since I was no 12 in the draft lottery, I shortly received my draft notice. I went to the Navy Recruiter's home that night and was on a bus to Boise the next day. I joined the Navy and was on a plane the next day to San Diego, California for boot camp. I completed boot camp and was trained to be an Interior Communications Electrician. I then went to Nuclear Power school in Vallejo, Calif. and then to prototype training on an actual nuclear reactor outside Idaho Falls, Idaho. I completed that training and went to submarine school in Groton, Connecticut. I was then selected for an officer program where they sent me to the University of Utah to get my degree in Chemical Engineering. After graduation in 1975, I was commissioned an Ensign. I went back through all the nuclear training again as a officer and then seved aboard two submarines where I became qualified as a nuclear submarine officer. I got off active duty after almost 11 years and took a job with Westinghouse East of Pittsburgh. I was there for over 26 years. I also joined the Navy Reserves and served for 25 years. I commanded five Navy reserve units. I was also mobilized for eight months and served durning Desert Shield and Desert Storm. I am now officially retired as a Captain, United State Navy. Two years ago, Westinghouse offered me a transfer to Ogden, Utah to work in their Zirconium Manufacturing Plant. I had lived in Pennsylvania for over 26 years and I wanted to get back West to real mountains. I live in Ogden, Utah right next to the Wasatch Mountains and I love it. I plan to stay and retire in Ogden in couple of years. I am looking forward to retirement because I am getting old, fat, and tired now. Blu...Expand for more
e skys and sunshine with majetic mountains is just where I want to be. Ogden, Utah is a great place to retire with a lot to do. Update on 4/9/2010 I am now retired from the Navy and the benefits are great. I still work at the Westinghouse Western Zirconium plant. I love my job because the people at the plant are hard-working and good people to associate with. My younger sister, Bonnie, passed away in January 2010. She was the wife of a minister. There were over a 1000 people come for her showing. She was a very outgoing lady and helped a lot of people. My Mom passed away on March 31, 2010. She was 85 and had a good life. They both will be missed. My wife had hip replacement surgery in December 2009 and just had a knee replaced last Friday (April 16, 2010). I am thankful that my joints are doing well despite having rheumatoid arthritis. I am sorry that so many people from my class do not remember me. I was very shy and a loner. I am thankful I got over being shy, but I am still a loner. One of these days I will scan my high school graduation picture and my Navy picture as a Captain and post them so you can see who I am. I hope who read this are well and happy! Ronald Reagen is my hero. Not only was he an excellent speaker, he had a great lowe for his country. He was inspired and the prime mover in bring down the Soviet Union. He also did a lot of great things to make America strong. My favorite saying from him is "trust but verify"! When raising my four children, I found that boys are worst than girls. My three boys gave me gray hair and then I pulled most of it out. They did things I would never have dreamed of doing and it begins with smoking and got much worse. Now my daughter Emily has been an inspiration to me My current age is 60. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be dead. I was so completely wrong. I know I am still young and people 110 years are old. To retire from Westinghouse is my biggest goal. I met my best friend at Westinghouse in Pittsburgh. He is a nerd just like me.
