Roger's Story

These are just responses from the Story Wizard 'cause I'm an engineer, not a writer. Maybe they give a little insight, though: The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Phil Myers, because we spent a lot of time together and talked to each other in German. Where is Phil? Don't care much about sports since Earl Campbell retired. I'm still missing Gene and Roy, but thankful that they are still on cable. My biggest surprise in life came last November. We seemed to have wasted a lot of time studying the constution. If I could improve my home, I'd remodel the kitchen and add on a bedroom and two bathrooms. My dream home would be... paid off. I would really like to see Mr Steiner again. He made science fun and made me want to learn more. Right now I am the happiest person I know just the way things are. It will get happier when I retire in 4 or 5 years assuming our president hasn't created another Jimmy Carter inflation era by then. My current age is 62. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be grandparents. I was so completely right - I have 6 grandkids. My first crush was our classmate Charle Findley. She moved to Colorado before graduation, then married another guy - breaking my 18 year old heart. I just discovered that she died in 2001. Her folks live in Austin TX - not far from my last home, but I didn't know it then. I hope to visit them soon. I still wear khaki pants, penny loafers and plaid shirts. It is the same stlye I wore 10 or 15 years ago. Actually they are the same clothes I wore 10 or 15 years ago. Don't we all or is it just me? On Friday I wear khaki pants, penny loafers and a Hawiian shirt - it's casual day on Friday. My weirdest job is the one I have now. My first week here they had me write up a proposal to the Navy about cheaper ways to rewire their ships. I must have been the logical choice because had never even been on a ship! Somehow we won the proposal, so now I'm doing it - very strange for a mechanical engineer. I share my home with my wife and our youngest child, who I am teaching to drive, which I find much more challenging than teaching the older two. There is also a dog a...Expand for more
nd a cat to share the place with. Surely that won't last forever. It's not often we get a do-over. I wish I would have learned earlier that the best way to ensure a wife makes you happy is to do all you can to make her happy. I could have been less selfish and more giving with Jackie. She is gone now, so out of luck for a do-over. But, I have a semi-do-over opportunity with Jean, my second wife of 3-1/2 years. My theory is totally proven true. In 10 years, I hope to be retired, in good health and taking off to Europe every now and then to visit the castles. I'm going to get there by voting conservative, going to the gym, and saving those free airline miles. Would you be surprised to know that I own a '76 Pinto station wagon? Took out the 4 cylinder engine and put in a 302 V8 with an Edelbrock intake and a Holly 4 barrel? Make stained glass windows? Have a grandson older than my daughter? My first job was at General Motors, where I got paid $3.00/ hr to file IBM cards. What I remember most about it is playing hearts at lunch. One childhood memory I will never forget is loafing around in the front yard grass with a friend, watching the cars go by and naming them all. When a blue and white '55 Chev came along I told my friend what it was and that my grandpa had one just like it. It turned into our driveway and really was my grandpa's, who had come 600 miles for a surprise visit. I used to go for a car ride to blow off steam, but not so much lately - too much traffic. Also not much steam to blow off, anyhow. Now I just go build or fix something when I need to relax. My to-do list is multiple pages, so it's easy to find something on it. It seems like I didn't do wild things in school - probably should have. Well, there was this one time Phil Myers and I cut class and went waterskiing. Does that count? We also spring loaded the slide rules in Mrs Pelzer's math class. If you put a rubber band on the slidey thing before you hand it back in at the end of class, the slidey thing will launch across the room the next time someone gets it out of the box. So far that's the only thing I've found that a slide rule does better than a calculator.
