Roger V. (Vin)'s Story

I was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Roger C. Woolf of Ravana and Dorothy L Woolf (Mead) of Coopersville. When I was four years old, my Mother and Father left me with my Grandparents on my Mothers side so, they could go to a Dance. At the time, we lived in Coopersville about a mile North of the High school. Anyway, at the dance, my father would dance with all the other women but, would not dance with my mother. How long this went on, I can't say but, a little later, a man approached my mother and asked for a dance. She accepted which, made my father very upset. They argued and left the dance, him slapping my mother around. When they stopped at my Grandparents to pick me up, the argument got hotter with my father punching my Grandfather in the mouth. We got in the car and headed for home. On the way, the argument really got hot to the point that, my father turned our side of the car around into the on-coming path of a truck. I didn't get hurt as, my mother was holding me so, shielded me, taking the brunt of the impact herself. She was injured quite badly and needed stitches in her head. Obviously, this all resulted in a divorce, rightfully so. We stayed with my Grandparents after that for about a year. After that, I hated the name of Roger. My family started calling me ¿Vin¿ or ¿Vinnie.¿ My middle name is ¿Vinton¿ after an Uncle I never met. I have since, only used the name of Roger in a professional manner or with people I do not know. About a year after the divorce, my mother married a man by the name of Gerald Everett. He had custody of his two children from a previous marriage. It seems, his ex had hired a hitman to do him in. That's why, he had custody of their children back in the late 40's. His daugh...Expand for more
ter was 5 days younger than me and his son was 2 years and 19 days younger. We stayed in the Coopersville area for another year before we moved up to Alden, Michigan. My Stepfather never really accepted me as his Stepson so, there was a degree of abuse. The only real reprieve I would have would be, when my mother would send me to my Grandparents every summer. Finally, that move became pretty much final at age 11 or 12. There were times, I would go back to try to live with my mother and Stepfather as, his kids had already left and went to live with their mother. It never really worked out well between us, so, I always ended up back in Coopersville. My mother wanted him to adopt me but, he had refused it so, other than missing my mother, I really had no reason to stick around there. Most of the time, I stayed with my Grandparents there, in Coopersville. In fact, all of the time. In the middle 50's, my Grandfather lost his job with Hayes Manufacturing. The economy was pretty poor, he went on Welfare but, back then it didn't give much. I went to work at age 13 for Old Nate Hammond on his farm North of Coopersville. I also went to work in the Bowling Alley setting pins. After my one and only school year there in 1957, I went back up to Traverse City to stay with my mother and Stepfather. Things did not go so well so, I quit school half way thru the school year. Before I had quit school, I had a talk with my mother asking if she would co-sign for me to enlist in the Military. She agreed so, at age 17 years and 19 days, I became a Soldier in the US Army. I liked it so, stayed in on Active Duty for 20 years. I'll stop here so, you can absorb this. There is a lot more. So, you take care and be safe. Your Loyal Friend ; Vin
