Heather's Story

Life My Husband Steve and I met in June of 1998, after my first year in college. We got engaged October 2002, and married August 31, 2003 in Garden Grove, California. My House In July 2004, Steve and I bought a house in Lakewood, California. It is a 3bd/1ba home in a nice, quiet neighborhood. My Pets I have three cats - Tracker, Minnie, and Zero. I also have an iguana named Bogey. School I loved high school, despite the fact that there was some drama, but what's high school without a little drama?! I was in band, a die hard geek to the end, and I'm proud to say that my youngest brother is walking in his big sister's footsteps. I have no idea who my biggest crush was in high school, and even if I did know, I probably wouldn't admit it here! I wouldn't say that I was inspired by any of my teachers, but I did have a few favorites. First and foremost, my band teacher, Mr. Hollander. Despite the temper, he was a good man, and a smart one too. I loved my French teacher, Ms. Lucas. She was a really cool lady, and I always enjoyed her class. Finally, I think my US History teacher, Mr. Travers was really cool too. He did fun activities in class, which made everything so much better. College I went to California State University, Long Beach, and graduated in 2002 with BA in Communicative Disorders (speech therapy), and a minor in psychology. I wouldn't say that I had the typical college experience, as I didn't live on campus, and wasn't into parties or drinking or any of those other rites of passage. I just went to class, hung out with Steve, and went home. I did pull plenty of all-nighters though, as procrastination became my middle name. Regardless, I still did well, and managed to land on the Dean's Honor Roll and President's Honor Roll during the time I was there. I even joined Psy Chi, an honors society for psych...Expand for more
ology students. After graduating, I decided to continue my graduate education there in speech therapy. However, 6 weeks into school, I decided that I no longer wanted to be a speech therapist. I dropped out, and it was one of the hardest decisions I ever made. In February 2004, I went back to school, though I took a different direction. I went to an allied health school called Newbridge College, located in Santa Ana. I'm currently studying to become a surgical technologist, to work in the operating room, handing instruments to the surgeon. It's an accelerated program, so I've been going four nights a week for a year straight through, with no summer, winter, or spring breaks in between. Thankfully, it's almost over, at which time I will be pursuing an externship. Workplace I started out in retail, which I think is the lesser of two evils when compared with food service. It takes a special person to work food service, and I'm not it. I worked retail for four years, and hated every minute of it. I got out of it in 2000, when I started working for a homeowners association out in Rancho Santa Margarita. That was fun for a while, especially in the winter, where we would hide in the back office on the weekends and play on the internet all day. After about two years at the HOA, I started working for a vitamin company, as an office clerk and data entry person. I actually really enjoyed that job. The work itself was okay, but I loved the people that I worked with. However, I had applied for a job at a school district before starting that job, and about a year later, the school district contacted me. I interviewed for a position just a few days before my wedding, and got a job as an office assistant. Two weeks after getting married, I started at the school district, where I am currently waiting out my time until my externship starts.
