Rolf's Story
November, 2013
Hinsdale has never left my life. My mentor was Art Sandeen (HTHS '56 whose brother John was in our '64 class). Art was the Head resident in Wilson Hall at Michigan State in my freshman year. Bill Scott, Diane Dickinson and Richard Harrison were also there and Jim Rose came later. I stayed in touch with Art and when, after graduating, I was in Vietnam in 1971, he wrote and told me that I would be coming to Iowa State, where he had gone as Dean of Students, when I got out. It became number one on my previously non-existent list of post-Vietnam options. I went to graduate school there got a Masters Degree and job at Georgetown running a residence hall complex starting with the 1972-73 academic year.
At the end of that year, Art called to ask me to apply for a position as director of a Veterans program at the University of Florida, where he was then V.P. for Student Affairs. I went there and worked in the Dean of Students Office and worked on my PhD from 1973-77. Art was on my doctoral committee. I saw him last in January of 2013 when I went to Gainesville for the reunion of a monthly poker group of which Art is still a part.
In 1977, I moved to Bozeman, Montana to begin work at Montana State University. The university president, who started on the same day, was Bill Tietz, HTHS '46. I met Jaynee Drange there and we were married in 1979. we have two sons, Peder, born in 1982 and Anders, born in 1986. I have had a wonderful career, mostly on the Bozeman campus of Montana State. I retired as Chancellor of Montana State University in May of 2014 and Jaynee and I are living in Bozeman.
In 1977, I decided that Florida was too hot for me and I thought Iâd like to live in the mountains. I was fortunate to get a position at Montana State University in Bozeman. I started there the same day as the then new president, Bill Tietz, HTHS â46. He and I embarrassed oursel...Expand for more
ves several times over the years by singing the alma mater, âWherever in the world you goâ¦â Bill still lives in Bozeman and I see him frequently.
In 1979, I married Jaynee who was then Director of Admissions and is recently retired after 20 years as President of the Alumni Association. We have two boys; Peder, born in 1982 and Anders, born in 1986. Peder is married to Jessica. They met as students at the University of Utah. After working for several years, they quit their jobs (Peder had worked for Trout Unlimited and World Wildlife Fund) in March of 2012 and, with their two dogs, embarked on a year-long rock climbing tour of America in their Chevy van. (pause for effect) Yeah, thatâs what I thought too, though Iâm getting used to it. At any rate to get a feel for their life, do a search for âpederandjessâ.
Anders is now in the job his mother had 38 years ago in the admissions office at Montana State University in Bozeman. He is perfect for the job and has been successful. Still single.
In 2010, I became Chancellor at Montana State University Billings which is about 140 miles from Bozeman. Jaynee and I went back and forth for three years, depending on who had what event. Not perfect, but we both enjoyed our work and our conjugal visits. She has now moved to Billings to be with me.
To complete the circle, in about 2003, Sherry Keller Brown, HTHS â62, who had lived in Tennessee, bought a summer place near Bozeman. She was in my brother Bobâs class, her older brother Dennis in MaryAnnâs class, '59 and her younger sister Cincy was in Sannaâs class, '66. Our fathers were close friends and worked together in Minnesota and moved to Hinsdale in about 1940. We all swam on the Golf Club team that was kind of the embryo for the first high school and age group teams.
Most recently saw several of the boys in the class in Las Vegas for Halloween of 2013.
