Ron's Story

Life Okay so I read this all the time, but here goes.... My adult life truly began 12 years ago with the birth of my son. Strange how such a little thing puts all the rest of your life in perspective. From a professional side, I am involved in the technology field and have been for over 20 years. If pressed, I would probably say my specialty is considered startup, integration, and mergers and aquisitions of companies. I have been part of the start up of a couple of mortgage firms, and then ridden the merger and aquisition bus a few times with those companies, and been on both sides of the fence. Personnaly, it seems I work too much, but I still enjoy the things I have always loved, riding my bike to the beach, golfing, and surfing, although it has been a struggle finding free time. Besides my son, I also have a big yellow lab who decided that I am his best friend. Between the two of them, I always feel the love. College College..... Leaving Torrance for New York at age 18 was probably the smartest thing I did. It forced me to be completely independent, while also showing me that there is no better place for me to live than in Southern California, and no better place to be than close to family..... Did you know in parts of this country they have 4 different seasons? West Point, New York: The Heat - I first survived a sweltering summer of heat, humidity, and daily 3:00pm rain storms. Life revolved around getting as much done as possible outside early in the day, before the weather breathed like Hades into the lives of the undead. I arrived at school in New York on July 1st at descent football playing weight for a freshman of 227lbs, but after 6 weeks on this crash course of heat, sweat, and a West Point Plebe diet, I emerged at a mere 195lbs. When I flew back to Torrance to play in the 1979 Lion's Charity game, no one could believe that the 2 years of work that was put into gaining weight for football could be wiped out in a mere 6 weeks (yes you read it right, I had to work at buking up for football in high school). Come to think about it, maybe it's time to revisit that West Point diet. The jewel of the seasons was definitely the fall. My first...Expand for more
east coast fall was beautiful, colorful, and enchanting. Clouds rode high in the air over the stadium, much like the hopes of the 40,000 fans that came to each home game. The air was filled with a cool crisp snap of autumn, something new and different. For the first time in my life, as I lay on my back on the turf stretching in pregame warm ups, I knew what it meant, "football weather". This was it surrounding me with vibrancy, from the color of the leaves, to the cool of the breeze, from the smell of the grass, to the roar of the crowd..... Football weather, division one style. When winter arrived I must say I really wasn't prepared. Sure I'd seen snow, been to Big Bear a hundred times at least. I knew cold, I knew snow, hell, I was 18, I knew it all.... When guys on the football team started layering on the clothes and putting tape over the ear holes on their helmets I thought they were crazy...... Seems the young California boy was the one who was a little daft. As the wind swept down the Hudson Valley blowing over the ice flows coming south down the river from the Hudson Bay, this boy had a revelation.... "Damn, this is way too cold!". Needless to say as our football practices stretched into early December, I too became skilled at layering clothes and taping over all the holes in my helmet. Although there wan't much snow that year, I did learn about cold, biting, bitter, and unforgiving cold. I also learned a bunch of new ways to get around campus without leaving the warmth of buildings or their adjoining tunnels. Spring arrived like a long lost but welcome friend. Welcoming the return of warmth and the green of days long forgotten. With it came the return to a life outside, reminders of life back in Torrance. Spring was truly a rebirth, a chance at all things new again. The start all hope and promise. Seasons, who needs them..... For me now, I welcome my seasons here in San Diego, Early Summer, Summer, Late Summer, and Next Summer. If I ever feel the need to revisit those other seasons, I will trade in some frequent flyer miles, and head on a plane northeast bound, taking with me the most vital piece of weather survival gear….. a return ticket home.
