Ron's Story
I left California in 1974. I finally got my first B.A. in 1979 at UNC-Wilmington. I went back and got my teaching certificate in 1990. I was a volunteer basketball coach at Laney High School for almost 20 years which included the Jordan years.
For you serious Jordan freaks who still have his retirement ceremony video, I'm on there getting my 15 seconds of fame along with the head coach, Clifton "Pop" Herring.
I worked as a middle school phys. ed. teacher and coach for three years and then had a great time for six years as a high school basketball coach at Pender High School. There my players earned me Coach Of The Year honors in two of the toughest conferences in the state by winning the regular season championship and conference tournament championships in my...Expand for more
second and fifth seasons.
I left there to enter the Principal Fellows Program. That program afforded me the opportunity to take a two year paid leave in order to pursue my Master's in School Administration. For that I owed the state four years of administrative service. As much as I enjoyed coaching (it was the most fun I had doing anything that people call work), the PFP was an offer I couldn't refuse.
I began my administrative career in Asheboro, NC as an assistant principal and in my second year I was made principal of North Asheboro Middle School. I served there for five years. I left there to get back closer to my home this school year (2009-2010) and am currently principal at East Arcadia School, a K-8 school in Bladen County near my home in Wilmington.
