Ron's Story

Life LIFE BIO - Where does one begin? I graduated from Ft.Knox HS, and went to Murray State University in 1973. Small town, big fun. Tried to play football and become a Racer, instead opted to be a long-haired hippie Art student. I decided to travel across the country and ended up in California (with $14 in my pocket) via Mexico and many states in between during the summer of 1975!. As I think back, there WERE some scary, creepy moments in the desert between Texas and CA! Lucky guy, I guess. Anyway, while working like a pack mule in CA, I found out I was awarded a 2-Year ROTC scholarship after all. I came back to Murray State University by way of a one way Greyhound bus ticket to Kentucky. I arrived at the Ft. Knox bus station flat broke! It was a great travelling adventure that July starting in California, via Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee and finally to Kentucky...having begun the journey at 6AM in a hot dusty Greyhound station in Indio, CA .....deathly hungover getting on the bus..... almost stayed on the bus to Calexico with a Mexican beauty...cried in my beer in Yuma at a bar, after missing my bus....ran out of money in El Paso...an old boxer felt sorry for me and bought me an egg salad sandwich and cup of coffee in Little Rock...and finally, I was home! I had no money to call anyone, so I walked home from the Greyhound station to 423 A Street! I graduated from Murray State University with a B.A. in History and was commissioned in June 1977 as an Armor officer. My ROTC Commander my senior year was LTC. Johnny Ralph Pritchard...Jodie Pritchard's dad! After two years of hard knocks with the RDF in Ft.Stewart, I went to Mannheim, Germany and 5/68 Armor via Ft. Knox again. One exciting note was that while at Ft. Stewart,GA - I was the Platoon Leader of 2nd Platoon, Charlie Company, 5/32nd Armor..the same platoon my father had had as a Platoon Sergeant 13 years before! I am still looking for that original crest - (Yellow Enamel with a Red Lightning Bolt through it) and that excellant motto VICTORY OR DEATH. If you have one, I would love to buy it! But I digress. After arriving in Germany, I met one of my best friends, Dave Ermi from "Aliquippa P-A", who is now my brother-in-law (married to my sister Diane for 23 years). Strange world. Since then, life has been a real adventure. Having travelled to CA on my own in 1975, I decided that the world was waiting to be discovered and since that epiphany, I have been to 37 states, 28 countries and 5 continents. The people and women in many of the countries I stopped in were just awesome! I met my wife in Germany, an Australian beauty named Suzanne from Sydney, Australia who had worked for the military and was then at the University of Maryland - Heidelbe...Expand for more
rg campus. FYI all you studs-I went to the Heidelberg Ski Club, on my own (my wienie fellow Lieutenants wimped out) and there discovered Paradise!! I felt like Gardner McKay (Adventures In Paradise)! Women from ALL OVER THE WORLD were members of the Heidelberg Ski Club! Yes, it was a Tanker's "target-rich environment!" A month later I met this tanned, hot, Aussie blonde in late October 1979. We have been married since October 1980 - married at the Post Chapel in Ft. Knox no less! (The late John Law sang at our wedding - magnificent voice...and a real nice guy! Chaplain Fly did the honors.) We are blessed with 2 beautiful, intelligent (brains before looks!) and athletic daughters. My eldest is a teaching golf pro. My youngest (named after a Stevie Nicks song) is a future scientist, veterinarian, or artist. She also would like to be like Lara Croft...go figure. She is attending Transylvania University in Lexington, KY currently. Sara was awarded a scholarship and is playing golf for Transy as well. UPDATE: She scored in several college matches as a freshman and lettered! Their team finished second in conference play! ...and she is now a Tri Delta. I guess freshman chicks dig that sorority stuff. UPDATE TO THAT UPDATE: Transy won the Women's Golf Championship this year at the Heartland Conference Championship Match, qualifying them for Nationals in Port St. Luce, FL in May 2009!! Anyway, my father still lives in the Ft. Knox area, and my mother-in-law is in Australia. We try to visit Irene at least every other year, and she and my late father-in-law (Ronald Albert Snashfold)even came to the States in 1994. Ron was an old salt who enlisted in the Royal Navy at the age of 17 and fought in submarines and light cruisers for the Royal Navy. He was a decorated veteran and a tough nut. He was a great guy and is missed. Both Ron and my mother, Ercilia, passed away in January and July 2003, respectively. I still keep in touch with some of my FKHS, MSU,UK, IBM and Army 'mates, and of course, have lost a few along the way. I hope that you are still awake when you reach this line, if so, drop an email note and say hello. Take care and God Bless. I do have a couple of favorite phrases of life that I live by.... "Sometimes..Nothing is a real cool hand." "You're asking me if I have paid my dues?.....Yes Sir, the check is in the Mail!" "I would rather regret the things I did, rather than regret the things I didn't do!" THE LATEST NEWS I finally became a grandfather on October 4, 2016. His name is Cash Kelly. My eldest daughter, Trina is teaching golf and has a Golf Academy, Sara, my youngest, is a Zoo Keeper in San Antonio, Texas. She is also an educator at SeaWorld. I am semi-retired and try and spend time writing fiction.

And so it goes. Proud of my MOS, service and desire to volunteer to be in harm's way. There is no greater feeling than pride in your country, caring for your friends and family, and being ready when the call came.

You can see our little friend in between us?
Aunt Ruth, Suzanne and Nora Escobedo.
I would say this has been true in my life. I have never let race, religion, someone's life choices and especially politics define my friends and the memories we shared.
Would you believe I found an oldie but goodie?. Suzanne may have taken this picture of Harold Holt, the Prime Minister of Australia. Taken on the day he disappeared swimming. Suzanne was in her bikini too. Younger than the
A new favorite picture of my daughters. I never get tired of seeing them together. I must admit I have been blessed. Taken in Alberta Canada on August 14th, 2012.
