Ron's Story
Life
1976: Don't know how, but with the administration's mercy, graduated Hamburg High
1976-88: performed as a percussionist in US Army bands while stationed in Texas, Germany (oh, yeah), and New Jersey, Private through Sergeant First Class.
1988: Decided to put one stick down, and apply for a United States Warrant as an army bandmaster/conductor/commander
1989-2004: earned my Warrant, and commanded Army Bands in Louisiana, Texas, and Germany, with wartime deployments to Bosnia, Macedonia and Iraq. Yeehaw. I was with the 4th Infantry Division in Tikrit, Iraq, when the 4ID caught Saddam. I have a little piece of his palace in my den that will forever remind me of the nightly bombings, shooting, rocket-propelled grenade and small arms attacks, and the daily chaos of that wonderful experience.
2004: My fun-meter pegged in Iraq and I retired as a Chief Warrant Officer 4, with a memories of some truly spectacular times and duty in every country in subcontinental Europe. 7 great years in Europe.., it's THE place to be.
Currently: Working & living in the City of Temple, TX, and manage the City's Fitness Center.
Personal:
- Married.. one time, to the same gal for 25 years, Hilde from Connecticut, a clarinetist and currently the music teacher at Pershing Park Elementary School. Living in a home built in 1896 in the Temple Historic District, ...Expand for more
a remarkable home and one that will outlast me, that's for certain.
- Kids. Kati, aged 25, is a state area retail sales manager and introduced our first grandchild, Kane in 2008. Reade, aged 21, manages parts at a foreign car facility that specializes in autos whose names I can't pronounce, nor afford.
- Pets.. two wirehaired dachshunds that we bought in Bavaria while stationed with the army in Germany. They're dumb as rocks, but great companions.
- Hobbies.. Texas competition BBQ and chili cooking. Won the State Championship Beef Brisket BBQ cookoff in 1993 (told them I was from New York and was nearly killed on the spot), Woodworking,Camping/Fishing/Hunting/, Motorcycling- restored a 1958 BMW, gourmet cooking, and golf (a sport in which I really, truly, suck)
- Things I like.. all music with the exception of Rap. If I go to hell, Rap will be broadcast 24/7. Pickup trucks, beer, martinis with Polish vodka, the Buffalo Bills & Sabres, the drama of politics, rare steak, and the United States of America. Nearly everywhere I've been, people value what is American.
- Things I hate.. did I mention Rap? Compact cars, the Dallas Cowboys and the No-Goal Dallas Stars, reality TV, sushi, and the pols in charge of North Korea who prefer to build shiny bombs instead of feeding their people.
