Ron's Story

Following my less than illustrious BHS career I had intentions of attending New Mexico Eastern in Portales. At the time my plans were to get a degree in Wildlife Science or Wildlife Management and get a job with the NM Department of Game and Fish. I was enrolled, had a room and schedule and about a month before school started my dad got sick and my plans went on the back burner. I was somewhat relieved because by that time I realized that in order to succeed in college I was going to have to make drastic changes to the poor study habits I'd developed in high school. Like almost every other time in my life when an important decision needed to be made I started doubting myself. I believe God always has plans for us and often our plans and His differ. That became apparent to me when a female acquaintance I'd met in church let me know she was interested in me as something more than a friend. We started dating in October after graduation and we would have never started our relationship had I been away at school. I'll be thankful for that forever. I started attending a trade school in Albuquerque named Southwest Computer College in February 1971. Before I completed that program in October, I had enlisted in the New Mexico Air National Guard. I left for Lackland AFB on October 17th and completed basic training in November followed by a tech school at Lowry AFB in Denver in January 1972. Shortly after returning home I got a job in the data processin...Expand for more
g department of the First National Bank in Belen as a key punch operator and programmer and ultimately Data Processing Supervisor. Debbie and I were married on August 10, 1973 and moved into a new home her dad had built for us in Los Lunas. (I know, I never believed I could survive life in Tiger country. ) The data processing department at the bank closed and I stayed on as a teller and whatever else they needed me to be until the branch manager in Los Lunas and I agreed that it would be best for me to seek employment elsewhere. I tried my hand in real estate and insurance until I discovered I was not a salesman and started looking for something else. I was hired full time by the Air National Guard in June, 1977. I was working for them in April 1983 when our first daughter, Jennifer, was born and in 1985 when our second daughter, Jamie, was born. I remained a technician with the Guard until my retirement in January, 2008 having served for 36 years. Fortunately during the 50 years since graduation I have come out of my shell and developed the confidence I lacked during my high school years. I have had a life I feel has truly been blessed by God. I have a wonderful wife I was lucky enough to have found, two very special daughters I love very much and plenty of life experiences I'm always more than willing to share. I also want to thank the classmates I shared my school days with, I believe you all had a hand in making me the man I have become.
