Ron's Story

Okay, here's a newer update (I'm updating this in January 2021). I wanted to include my personal e-mail address but it won't let me. Quite simply it is my first name "ron.sasso" and the server is Yahoo. I put this in here because if someone really wants to contact me you'll e-mail me there as I don't have the gold, silver, or platinum classmates membership---I have the tin foil one. I don't usually spend too much time on social media because I have a website as well. As far as my "story" first, the checklists they provided really don't cut it for me. Too many things that I like and that I do won't fit into the boxes. I was married from 1992 to 2019. I am on relatively good terms with my ex-wife, but I decided to leave after 26 years of marriage. I got diagnosed with systemic scleroderma in 2016 (it's an autoimmune disease) and had no emotional support from my wife. Having a major health issue and feeling alone wasn't a good feeling. I moved out and we had an amicable divorce. My ex initially wanted to believe I left to have an affair but then she realized that wasn't the case. Fortunately, my kids figured it out sooner than she did (as she told everyone that was the case). She's not a bad person, but she has issues. As a result, I decided to take some time before dating. I figured I needed at least six months (I wouldn't date while separated). So...I waited...and then a pandemic hit. Great time to be single! I still haven't dated. Such is life. Having scleroderma was an adjustment but I am doing well with it. Most people aren't as fortunate as I've been. I have three wonderful children (boy 23, girl 20, boy 18). My two oldest kids own their own homes. My oldest is looking at joining me in real estate. I was the director of The Brain Injury Rehabilitation Center, an outpatient brain injury rehabilitation program in Rapid City, South Dakota (in the beautiful Black Hills). I enjoyed my job---but I'll get to that later. I write screenplays on the side but haven't sold any yet (though I have come close). I also wrote columns for the local newspaper. They were mostly about local politics. After one column I had the city council president try to get me fired from running the brain injury program. Six weeks later I was unexpectedly unemployed. The guy had even bragged about being able to get me fired. The elected official ended up getting unanimously reprimanded by the city council. There were several members who thought he should have been thrown off but politics played a role there. I also made a change of careers---going into real estate where I don't have to worry about politics. I still keep my counseling license active. I still run. I've run 9 marathons and switched to half marathons after my scleroderma diagnosis. My fastest so far was 1:40:51 (not too shabby in my opinion for a guy in his 50's with an autoimmune disease). I play racquetball from time to time (not as much as I'd like though). I don't think I've changed all that much since high school---I'm still an idealist and I still enjoy writing. I guess it was a good thing that most people were able to reco...Expand for more
gnize me at the 20 year class reunion. However, I've since cut my hair shorter because I sometimes ride a 400cc scooter (and wear a helmet---hey, I worked with people with brain injury---it's dangerous if you don't). Before you laugh at the scooter thing, it will go 100mph---but I haven't taken it past 80mph. That's fast enough for two wheels. I'm a Christian who's actually read the entire Bible more than a half dozen times (and I'm a slow reader). I live in Rapid City, South Dakota (yes, that's in the United States). I moved there as part of the Witness Protection Program....only kidding. I love it out here! It's beautiful and we have better weather than NJ. Of course you couldn't pay me to live in much of the rest of the state because it's much colder. The Badlands are beautiful though (they're about an hour away---the photo I posted was taken there). I get back to NJ about once a year and spend some time at the shore. The only thing we lack out here that I miss is the ocean, so I get that out of my system with my vacations. Sometimes I'll make it out to the west coast and see the ocean there. I'm easy enough to find on the internet. Just do a search for me. You may also find a few links about me co-writing a screenplay (much further in on a Google search). Don't believe it...it didn't happen. So far I've written all my screenplays alone. Some other history: In 2010 I decided to dive into local politics out here (part time). I ran for Council in Rapid City. As I mentioned, I love living out here but there's actually been some corruption and it had charged me up enough to dive into politics in hopes of fixing some of those issues. The first time I ran the incumbent opted to back out and then five other people joined the race (for a total of six). I finished second that year and made it to a run off---but I had a vacation planned and was gone 10 of the last 12 days before the election (I was in NJ at the shore). Anyway, I lost that year. My opponent had previously run for a state position twice. I opted to run again in 2011 and had an opponent who worked in City government for over 40 years as an employee. I was outspent 8-1 but still won. Rapid City is the second largest city in South Dakota, so being on City council here is a bigger deal than even I thought. Don't worry, it hasn't gone to my head. If it ever does, I'm done with politics. I ran for re-election in 2013 and lost. My Dad had passed away and then at the last minute a multi-millionaire moved into my ward and ran against me. Needless to say I was outspent. I ran again last year and was outspent 6:1 (I chose not to fund raise). It was a mistake. I ended up losing by just 108 votes. Right now I'm taking a break even though the current mayor is trying to convince me to run again. Now I get my political say in my newspaper column. :) Anyway, enough said. I don't have many regrets in life. That's not to say there aren't things I wouldn't mind changing but I don't have many regrets. Besides, it's never to late to change.... : ) Hope all is well with all of you who visit here! Best wishes, Ron
