Sara's Story

Life Well. If you cared enough to click through to this bio, then I will assume that you are someone I considered a friend back in 76. So what the hell, I will not hold back. You may have noticed in my Q&A that I listed my gender as Female. That was not a mistake. Please, call me Sara. On December 17, 2006, upon arriving in Bangkok, I stopped being Ron and began to live as Sara 24/7. I became known to all friends, family and co-workers as Sara and I have never looked back. On that trip to Thailand I underwent facial feminization surgery, and I am going back in January 2008 for sex-reassignment surgery. I am no beauty queen - and like you, I am (ahem) 50-ish. But considering that I wasn't good-looking even as a guy, I look pretty darn good now. People smile and call me "ma'am", and I even get hit on occasionally, which is extremely weird. I will say that right after surgery, the sight of me was enough to frighten dogs on the street. I don't mean that metaphorically, either. Where I was staying in Thailand, there were lots of wild dogs in the streets. I had a cast on my face, and more than once I saw a dog jump out of its skin when it caught sight of me. Life as Sara is deeply satisfying. As soon as the hormones kicked in (before most people knew), the world just became more vibrant, more clear, more right. It is the best time of my life. Transition has been very smooth. There were a few hiccups, but family, friends and co-workers have all accepted me as Sara. In public, I have never been harassed in any way. This is probably because most people don't even read me - they look at me and see a 50-year-old woman. And even if they do...Expand for more
read me, well, I live on the coast of Northern California, near Santa Cruz, and it is probably the one spot in the country that is even more liberal than Mass. So anyone who reads me still just smiles and calls me "ma'am". Many other trans people that I know have a much less positive experience, especially with family, but also with strangers. Even around here. So we have a long way to go yet. OK, now for the vital statistics. Simone and I were married in 1984 at Lake Tahoe, and we were happy for a long time. But things change, and we separated several years ago, and that is when I made my decision to become Sara. She now lives less than a mile away, and we are still friends, so it is very easy for either of us to drop by, drop the kid off, or whatever. We have two girls: Cori, who was born in 1988 and is now in college, and is the kind of radical that gives UC Santa Cruz its reputation as the "worst school in America" (according to Fox News, ha ha ha!); and Erin, who is in high school and is determined to become a star. They are both beautiful and brilliant (I don't know how that happened). We live in a teeny tiny town about 10 miles from the coast. My family is all nearby. And speaking of radicals, Mark DiPietro is not too far away, either, and in fact he and his family came to Thanksgiving dinner last month. OK, if I go any further I will bore you to tears, so I will stop. I'll just add that if you are so inclined (maybe you, Steve Salisbury, who's answer to "How's Life?" is, "I'd rather not talk about it"), you could probably Google me using either name. But if you use my new name, it is "Sara Meuse", not "Sara LaJeunesse".
