Ron's Story

Where does one begin? Some of you might remember me from athletics, I ran track and cross-country for my 4 years at GGHS. Among the cognoscenti of the track team, I was given the name of "Sugar Foot" by coach/history instructor Homer Delabar after I ran a distance event with a candy bar in my shoe. It was one of my first big races and I was just a bit nervous? We would eat candy bars before our events for an energy boost, but I can personally attest that melted milk chocolate on the bottom of your foot has little actual effect. Incidentally, Homer Delabar and his wife Charlotte became life long friends and mentors. I am gratefully and forever indebted to them. After graduating from GGHS I went to Long Beach State and got a degree in anthropology. While there I had the opportunity to do field research with some interesting characters and spent a couple of years studying the Paiute Indian language in Nevada. I also minored in Photography. I managed to endure 2 more years of educational degree certification and began to teach at high schools around Los Angeles and Orange County. I was even a substitute instructor a couple of times at GGHS. That was a strange time warp! Mr. Powell (science instructor) actually looked younger. Then I realized he had acquired a hair piece! Eventually I settled down (marriage) and began to travel. I know that sounds like a contradiction, but we were fed up with the blandness (our perception) of Southern California and in need of new frontiers. So we quit our jobs and ran away to Europe for about 6 months. That was a seminal event because it was there that I decided I did not want to remain a high school instructor for the rest of my life - I had fallen in love with photogr...Expand for more
aphy! A return to SoCal where I ended up in one of Santa Ana's "worst" high schools. What a wonderful experience it was. There were so many dedicated staff and some of the finest teachers I have ever worked with. In spite of the challenges of education, culture and societal status, our students did remarkably well. I taught photography there and it became the vehicle for so many (including me) to delve into worlds and sensibilities previously unknown. I went back to graduate school and received my Masters degree in art and design. I began teaching in the evenings at local Community Colleges and working on weekends as a freelance photographer. The writing was on the wall that I wanted a bigger responsibility and deeper understanding of my craft and art. Eventually a full time position opened at Napa Valley College in California and I relocated there. For 25 years I ran the Photo Program that served about 400 students each year. A general curiosity about the world and travel remained a passion for me. I've managed to see a good deal of the planet and had the opportunity to teach photo courses in Central America, Asia, and the Caribbean through the college's international program. Last year I retired from Napa Valley College and have begun to recreate as in re-create myself and interests. Photography remains a central focus and I am a consultant in that area. I am the president of the local Mac computer user group and consult/tutor individuals and groups. I am an active exhibitor and occasionally write for magazines. And I absolutely love this beautiful little valley which has become my home. I have no children of my own but hundreds of former students who remain in constant contact and friendship.
