Ron's Story

Life Ron Stark is the director of S/R Laboratories Animation Art Conservation Center in Westlake Village, California. For the past 30+ years he has been “Mickey’s doctor,” as he sometimes says in an attempt to briefly explain his job. S/R Laboratories is the only facility in the world dedicated to the preservation of art used in the making of animated films. S/R is also the home of Courvoisier Galleries® of San Francisco. In 1937, Courvoisier Galleries became the first to sell and distribute Disney’s animation art to the general public. Today, all of the styles, traditions, and craftsmanship that went into the distinctive Courvoisier presentations created at the Disney Studios and later at Courvoisier reside at S/R Labs. In addition, S/R recreated the unique inks and paints for Disney’s Art Editions Sleeping Beauty limited edition cel suite and has restored artwork for many Disney Company departments, including the Disney Archives and the Animation Research Library. Ron has served as the consulting conservator and archivist to Disney’s World Wide Publishing division in Burbank, providing guidance for the preservation of over one million images from the historic Golden Books to comic strips, model sheets, stills, coloring and activity books, and just about any image you can recall from the hundreds of thousands of Disney publications produced over the years. Add to that the Disney Art Editions archives as well. Whether it’s a Sericel, limited edition boxed set of illustrations, or a hand-inked production cel, itÂ...Expand for more
’s Ron and his expert team who will help preserve it for future generations. In 2001, S/R Laboratories, in conjunction with the Disney Family Foundation and Retlaw Enterprises, co-sponsored “Walt Disney: The Man and His Magic” at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum commemorating Walt’s 100th birthday. The four-month-long event featured one of the largest vintage animation art galleries assembled in recent years, displaying art from the most memorable Disney films and cartoon shorts. It was Ron’s job to create the gallery and populate it with representative examples of art and artifacts to best exemplify the work of Walt Disney and his staff. Was it a success? “I think we did a good job because the Reagan Library realized the best attendance in its history over the four-month run of the show,” Ron points out. Ron is a member of several professional organizations including the Western Association for Art Conservation, the National Society for Paint and Coatings Tehcnology, The American Feneration for Television and Radio Artists, and the Director’s Guild of America. Ron has also been an accomplished “voice” in the entertainment community and has starred in the Sears Radio Theater; recreated the personalities of Walter Winchell, Howard Cossell, and many others for radio commercials; and was the voice of the American Heart Association. He is an award-winning producer and served as associate producer for Leslie Iwerks’s Disney film, “Ub: the Hand Behind The Mouse,” distributed by Buena Vista.
