Ronald Gilbert's Story

School Mr. Fleeks B. Hazel, my homeroom teacher, was my inspiration. I would not change a thing about my school experience. The funniest thing that happened to me was being called along with my twin brother Donald to the Principal's office only to find out that there was another set of freshmen Baker twins who were trouble makers whose presence was being requested. I started taking photographs at lunchtime of many of the girls and gave them the photos the following week after I made money on my Washington Post paper route. Since I wasn't a jock, the camera was my only access to the ladies. Who knew it would take my brother Donald and I to where we are today? College I attended Federal City College in D.C. which was later renamed UDC. I remember my many hours in cinematography class as well as the hours I spent photographing all of the beautiful women on campus. One of the main campus buildings back then is now the D Street Homeless Shelter. It looks better today! My favorite memory was being able to give my Mass Media and Cinematography Professor, Tex Gaithings, a copy of my first coffee-table book which acknowledged him as one of my key supporters and motivators. Workplace I've worked pretty much my entire adult life. From a clerk-typist position at the Navy Department in the late 60's, to serving 2 years in the Army after being drafted back in 1971, to a manager position at the phone company to establishing my photography-video business full-time in 1995, my work life has been a most enjoyable and memorable experience which I would not change for anything in the world. Military & Family My brother Donald and I were drafted into the Army in 1971 and served our 2 years getting out in 1973. The experience helped us grow into men. The best part of the experience was meeting my wife of 40 years while serving the last 6 months of my active duty. She was on vacation from Wisconsin with family in Maryland. We met on August 4, 1972 while trying to get into the Mark IV Supper Club to see Eddie Kendricks. We went to "The Room" nightclub on 12th Street instead. I took her to to see Al Green at the Carter Barron the following week and "Let's Stay Together" has been our son ever since. My daughter Kellee who graduated from Maryland University in 2000 and Howard University School of Law in 2006 just made my wife and I grandparents on April 19, 2008. Trevino Michal Baker is our grandson's name and he's a star (what else would I say). Kellee founded Citydwellers, LLC, her real estate brokerage firm in 2006 and KB Law Firm in 2007. urnalism. My work has been published in many of the top newspapers and magazines in the country to include The Washington Post, Washingtonian Magazine, Washington Life Magazine, Ebony & Jet Magazines, InTouch Weekly Magazine, The Afro-American Newspaper, The Informer, Players Magazine, Billboard Magazine and many others. My work has also appeared on BET's Video Soul, The Oprah Show, two episodes of "Unsung" (Melba Moore & The O'Jays" and on WUSA-TV09. I've published four photography books, "Solid Images...A Collection of Memories" in 1994 and co-authored "Washington, D.C. - 1963-2006" with author Tracey Gold Bennett in 2006. I recently published my first two iBooks, "Monumental Treasures of Washington, D.C." and "One Day Assignment The Jacksons" both in 2012. Both can be found on iTunes in the iBookStore. Just go to the iTunes Books Store and type in Ronald Gilbert Baker. You can find the first two at any Barnes & Noble, Borders Books, Amazon.com, Target Online and Wal-Mart Online. My brother Donald & I were inducted into The Historymakers organization out of Chicago and we were recognized for our historical body of photographic images. Donald and I were honored by the Chairman Of Booz Allen Hamilton, Dr. Ralph Shrader, with the Chairman's award for our 22 years of volunteer support for the Paul Berry Neediest Kids program with helps D.C. area children with school supplies and clothing each school year. We were also given a service award by the National Association of Black Accountants in June 2008 for 20 years of support services to that organization at their annual convention in Atlanta. In 2010, Donald and I were recognized by Congresswoman Christensen and the Congressional Black Caucus Health Brain Trust "Leadership in Journalism Award". At that event was Walter Williams of the O'Jays who also received an award. The O'Jays are clients our mine. Donald and I have appeared on WUSA TV-9 as guests of Anchor Bruce Johnson in 2010, the Joe Madison Show on Sirrus Radio, Morgan State Radio, and a PBS special. My wife Gene and I celebrate our 40th anniversary in April 2013 along with our grandson's 5th birthday. I am very proud of what I have accomplished in my personal and professional life and I owe a great deal of it not only to my parents and my wife but to my Anacostia Senior High School experience. I still have photos from the 60's that I took at school with my point and shoot cameras. We lost a very dear friend last week, Wayne Wigham. Our friend Michael Diggs lost his father last week also at the age of 96. Please pray for the Wigham's and the Diggs' families as they embrace the transition of their loved ones.
