Ron's Story

Life Graduated UC Berkeley and married Mary Lou Hollywood in '68. We spent two years in the National Teacher Corps teaching at Dilkon School on the Navajo Indian Reservation 35 mi NE of Winslow, AZ (yes, we stood on THAT CORNER many times) while also earning an MA from Northern Arizona University. Returned to Paso and taught in Atascadero. Left teaching after a decade and started a State Farm Ins. agency in Paso. Became a District Manager in Northern Santa Barbara County. Returned to agency in San Luis Obispo in '89. Retired in October 2013 after 36 years with State Farm. Mary Lou and I have two boys, 14 years apart. Our older son, Pat, is developmentally disabled and lives in a long term care home in the north county. Our younger son, James, ended his enlistment in the Marine Corps as a Sergeant. His second Iraq deployment was with the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit in Al Anbar Province where his unit earned the Presidential Unit Citation for their work in starting the "Miracle in Al Anbar". Upon his return I was honored to be invited to join the 15th MEU aboard it's flagship, the USS Boxer, and make the last leg of their trip (Pearl Harbor to Camp Pendleton) back ...Expand for more
from Iraq. It was a fabulous experience! James is now an emergency medical services helicopter pilot living in Idaho Falls, ID and stationed at West Yellowstone. In June (2020) James and his wife, Elena, presented us with our first and only grandson, Connor. Whew! That was a long wait! Mary Lou and I have lived in San Luis Obispo since 1989--the longest either one of us has ever lived in one place. Mary Lou manages our real estate and maintains her real estate broker’s license but is no longer active in the business. Mary Lou is a world class calligrapher and a fine painter as well. Yep, she's got a She Shed art studio. I spend time in the garden, am now retired from playing fiddle when my back gave out (starting in my early 40's I studied violin for 15 years with a retired concert violinist), still play guitar and some mandolin, cook for the family, work on the house, do a little handyman work on our properties, keep the books on the real estate empire, visit in Idaho, and try to get in some summer fly fishing in Idaho and Montana now and then. Just this spring we bought a second home in Idaho Falls. We will be spending summers in Idaho and winters in SLO Town.
