Ronald's Story
Attended Morris Harvey College for one year 1977-1978. Then moved in state to Old Dominion University where I was the President of the Political Science Club and the Model UN for one year. Working my way through College I went to work for Giant Open Air (Not Giant Food) for one year. While managing the front end of a large store, I was only making minimum wage and moved to Safeway after one year.
At Safeway I worked in Virginia Beach and Norfolk. During the summer, I was a Beach Bum by day, and general Jack-of-all-trades by night, (check out, stocking and office) any given night. Lived at the Beach for 10 years, spending 4 summers at Nags Head (worked hard and played hard). When Safeway closed I moved back to Northern Virginia to work for Giant Food (Yes the one we grew up with) and was a part of the Management Program. I spent 6 months in the Philadelphia suburbs opening new stores and traing new staff.
At 30 years of age, I developed back problems in my upper back and had two discs replaced. Back to work after 10 weeks and trained like the dickens to recover. Was fine for 13 years even running triathlons for two years. (Never fast, but I finished.)
My Back was not a problem for 13 years after surgery, then started acting up. I've now been retired on Disability for 8 years....Expand for more
Not getting rich, but keeping my head above water. Still would like to go back to work, but it doesn't look like it's in the cards.
In 1998 I bought a town house behind the Giant in Lake Ridge. (Odd being a mile from the old High School) In 2004 sold the town house and moved to the country. I now live 100 miles southwest of DC. I'm now living in Ruckersville, about 10 miles north of Charlottesville. I'm 6 miles from the base of the Blue Ridge and 12 miles from Skyline Drive.
Since retiring I focused on researching my family history. (I was born in Twin Falls, Idaho.) I have self published 5 books on my family history. My last book was 585 pages with 100 pages of photos. My first two books dealt with my ancestors who came to Massachusetts in 1685. My database is just over 100,000 cousins. I'm a member of the local Historical Society and manage our website. (Still learning) I travel exensively to do research and am now working on three more books. (70,000 miles in 2-1/2 years on my Dodge Caravan). I also have a Dodge Dakota. (Sure beats my Mom's old gold Ford Galaxie 500 with no gas gauge!) My next book is currently over 1,600 pages dealing with my Norwegian roots who immigrated to Minnesota and Iowa in the 1860's.
I can travel since I've never married and don't have any children.
