Ronald's Story

Hi. This is me, short version. I left Hutch on march 3, 1972. Seems like yesterday. Went to USAF Basic training in San Antone, graduated from that and Technical School in July. First station was Ellsworth AFB, 12 Miles outside Rapid City, South Dakota, in august. Camped in the Black hills alot. Got there just after Pactola Damn Burst from too much rain and flooded, killed alot of people. Worked on body location detail for two weeks, then went to work with B-52 Bombers. Stayed 14 months, Then went to Bitburg Airbase in West Germany in Oct 1973, worked with F-4 Phantom fighter jets, toured a lot of western Europe, stayed 2 years. Came back stateside in November 1975, attended new tech school for new specialty at Keesler AFB in Biloxii, Mississippi for 4 months, then 30 days leave to see Mom, Dad Little Brother. Arrive at Malmstrom AFB, Great Falls, Montana in May 1976. Sang in choir st fairgrounds there and at the base chapel for United States of America Bicentennial. More later, gotta run errands. March 1977-got stationed at Murphy Domw Air Force Staion. Landed in Fairbanks, the rode the station mail truck( Air Force Crew-cab-Dodge driven by one-armed madman civilian wirh a prosthetic hook on right arm) 30 mile up hill on on upcurving gravel mountain road at terrifying speed to the top of a mountin, the only proper location for a radr station. Was nineteen at the time, and had to change my drawers when we got there, but I never screamed once. Sure wanted to!! Spent the next 12 months playing hide-n-seek, peek-a-boo, catch me if you can, and GOTCHA with the Russian bombers versus ou...Expand for more
r f-4 Phantom fighters off the coast of Alaska with ground control intercept radar. Cold War idiocy. Then went to Port Austin AFS on the Northern tip of the thumb in Michigan for 30 months with an old Alpha Band surveillance detection radar, ready to do do a Hail Mary to tell higher headquarters Soviet bombers were in-bound, then try not to die in the next 20 minutes. More Cold War frights. More later. Chores to do. Oct 1981-Left Port Austin, now had a family. Met my wife in Bay City MI 17 months earlier. She had tiny beatiful 2 yr old daughter named Chrisine. Former husband disapeared soon after she was born. Married Phyllis in December 1979, and adopted Christine. My new and only wife gave birth to fraternal twins, Amanda and Christopher, 13 June 1980. They were two months premature but they made it! My wife was also a fraternal twin. The doctors told her she would probably do it again if she got pregnant again. With one of her more EMPHATIC NEGATIVES she said " no way no how, no when doctor, you fix me on the table after Amanda and Chris are borne"!! And that's what happened. Three munchkins was enough! Relatively instant family. I was thrilled and stayed that way for the next two decades. Took my family home to live in this very house while I had to go to Indian Mountain Air Force Station, back to Alaska. More cold war ideocy for next twelve months. Then I flew to Hutch and loaded us all up in a station wagon we towed with a Uhaul truck and drove to Malmstrom Air Foce base in Great Falls Montana. All five od us rode in the truck. Great Falls-Great Place! More Later.
